Power failure

The last few weeks the washing machine/toaster/something has been knocking
of the power in the house. everytime this happens when i go to start my
computer even if it wasn't on at the time of the power cut it gets through
loading windows XP then makes a clicking sound then all i have is a black
screen and the curser which moves, where the log in screen should be. if i
mess around with it long enough and press the restart button enough times it
comes back on but i'm worried one day it'll never come back.
some help please?

the registry may be corrupt.

one trick is that on a blank desktop
do a ctrl alt del

then

see if explorer.exe is running. if so
then kill the process and go to the
first tab and run explorer.exe

if not, then launch/run explorer.exe

afterwards

i suggest that you do a
chkdsk /r

and then

download/run a freeware called
eusing

and then

download/run a freeware called
pagedfrg from microsoft.com

then reboot and check the
status of the issue...
