When downloading SP1 I got a message that some necessary Windows files were missing and to insert
the disk for the Program. I did this and clicked retry
and everything finished. The PC is not working right
and I think I may have lost some files. How can I check and fix is needed. I'd hate to have to do a full
reinstall as I'm afraid I'll loses a lot.

Thanks.

What does "not working right" mean? Explain is as much detail as possible
the problems and error messages.

I'll check my PC when I get home. Not working right means that every (and I mean every) game trys to start and brings me back to my Desktop. I reinstalled one yesterday - it worked for an hour and then the same thing happened and after repeated attempts it kept happening (by the way MS Word and IE still function with no problems) . Any thoughts on what I might do to start to diagnose/identify the problem. By the way, when I inserted the XP disk when prompted during the SP1 download it seemed that nothing was copied but the dowbnload restarted on clicking Retry

Thanks much

Heat would be my first guess, then I'd go from there. Playing games uses
alot of processor power and the heat generated by it can jump up pretty high
during game play. If it gets to hot it will make the os freeze. Make sure
that all your fans are working good and are cleaned out. You should have a
fan mounted directly to the processor, a power supply fan, and at least one
case fan, but the more the better. Leaving the case cracked open a bit can
help too. Add more fans if you can. Once your sure heat is not an issue, try
game play and see if the freezes keep up. If so update your video card
drivers.
