Windows XP Installation

I have windows xp sp3 on my computer. When i try to reboot my computer by
re-installing xp professional sp2, it keeps telling me that a7ug6caa.sys file
is missing and windows cannot finishing copying. This happened after i
inserted the cd and entered the product key. It gave me three options. Retry
copying, Skip file or Exit setup. The only one that seems to work is exit
setup. Please help. I have a terrible virus on my computer and i want to
reboot it before it crashes. Thanks.

unfortunately, sp3 and
sp2 are considered as
different versions of the
software.

although sp3 is only an
update, you may as well
look at it as an upgrade

and cannot downgrade
it back to sp2, without
a disk format "or"

removing sp3 via the
add/remove programs
first.

at best, the only thing
the sp2 disk serves on
an sp3 system is its
repair/recovery console
or a window ornament.

perhaps, you may be
able to utilize the repair
console via your sp2 disk.

but we would need to
know a bit more of the
issue you are trying to
resolve by attempting
to reinstall sp2.

What are the exact steps you are taking? That file name looks
suspiciously like malware.

Thats not an MS File
You cannot repair a winxp sp3 installation with a winxp sp2 cd, nor is a
repair likely to cure a bad infestation, you can only clean install (unless
you create a slipstreamed cd of winxp, containing sp3)

Apparently, you still do, and the reinstall isn't fixing it.
and i want to
reboot it before it crashes. Thanks.

If you have a badly infected system, you might be best off by backing up
your data to another system that has enough space AND up-to-date antivirus
scanners, then wiping your drive and starting over. After copying the
data, delete the partitions on your drive, put it back in, and then start
Setup again.

If you don't have access to another system, consider a newer hard disk.
Where I am, 250 gig disks are about $70. Remove and set your current drive
aside, do the install to the new drive, and later, after the A/V is
installed and up to date, attach your old drive to recover the data.

Or, attach your drive to the other system, and scan it from there. In
addition, locate all the Temp and Temporary Internet FIles folders and empty
them completely. This will probably clear out significant portions of the
malware, and speed the scan. You will also have to turn System Restore
off, as the restore points are likely infected.

Sometimes starting over *from clean* is the fastest way to get this job
done, and the easiest way to start from clean is to delete the partitions
and re-create them.
