Possible Virus ??

The last few times I have used Word 2002 my work has been interrupted by an
error message which, when cancelled, shows that all my work is lost as Word
has shut down. The error message is:
MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY
Runtime Error!
Program C:\ ...\ WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination.

I have run Norton Antivirus on the full computer but it found nothing.
Can anyone tell me what is happening & how to put it right?

Thank you Graham Mayor for your reply on this. On my stand-alone machine
there are no global templates beyond Normal.dot but there are two COM
Add-ins: (1) MS Word East European Fonts Tool, which was ticked (sorry,
checked), and (2) Web Page Wizard (unchecked). I have unchecked (but not
deleted) both but Word still crashes.

It never crashes on startup, rather when I am writing a new document,
perhaps one or two hours later; sometimes when merely idling in Word. In case
it's relevant I run Windows XP (Home).

I am minded to disable the Norton AntiVirus Plugin and/or update Adobe
Acrobat Reader. I have vulnerable versions of both of these according to the
second article you referred to, but as Word never crashes on startup these
may not be the answer. I await your further thoughts with gratitude.

Thank you Graham Mayor for your kind response. My stand-alone machine running
WindowsXP (Home) has no extra global templates beyond Normal.dot but I found
two COM Add-ins: (1) MS Word East European Fonts Tool, and (2) Web Page
Wizard. The first of these was ticked (sorry, checked) but the second was
not.

I have unchecked both but Word still crashes. This can occur when I am
typing a new doc or even when the machine is idling in Word. The time at
which it occurs follows no particular pattern.

I am minded to disable the Norton AntiVirus Office Plug-in and to update the
Adobe Acrobat Reader since the second article to which you referred indicates
possible implication. But I will wait to receive your further thoughts
before doing so.

Certainly disable the Norton AV office plug-in. It's a bug fest!
You need to uninstall the add-ins to eliminate them as sources of the
trouble.
Run detect and repair from the help menu and regardless of whether the
problems occur ar startup or not, work through the suggestions listed in
that link.

A Visual C++ error indicates a COM Add-in.

Unforunately not all COM add-ins display in the COM Add-in utility in
Word. Those that are installed per-machine (all users), rather than
per-user, do not display.

Finding them could be easy or difficult:

- First go to Help/About Microsoft Word
- Click the "System Info" command
- Navigate to Office 10 Applications\Microsoft Word\COM Add-ins
- Check each add-in on the right and see if there are any you didn't
find in the COM Add-ins utility and check the "Installed" status. If
it is installed then it's one you want to check out.

Failing that try the following:

1) On the Tools menu, point at Macro, and click Security in the
submenu
2) Select the Security Level tab if necessary
3) Set macro Security to Medium
4) Select the Trusted Publishers tab
5) Deselect Trust all installed add-ins and templates
6) Remove all Trusted Publishers/Trusted Sources
7) Exit and restart Word

When Word starts you will be prompted to Enable/Disable macros for
each add-in. The message box will also provide the file name and
location. Note those that start with F*.DLL, such as FStock.DLL,
FName.DLL are for smart tags and they have not been known to cause
this issue at this time.

If you are still unable to find the add-in then download the Process
Explorer from:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

- Start Word
- Run the Process Explorer utility
- In the upper pane select Excel.exe
- Locate the "View DLLs" command in the Toolbar (if you see View
Handles then View DLLs is already in use)
- In the lower pane locate the DLLs and see if you can determine which
DLL could be causing the issue. The Description and Company Name
columns may help you out. (Click the Name column heading to sort)
- Locate the path for the DLL in a column on the right
- Once found exit Word and rename the DLL to prevent it from loading.

Note it is best to rename the file extension rather than the file
name.

If you can not determine if a DLL is needed by the application then
use File/Save As to save a copy of the data as text. Then you can
copy/paste the DLLs from the Notepad for us to take a look at.

Heartfelt thanks to Beth Melton and Graham Mayor for their detailed help
which I have only just received. I apologise for the unintended multiple
postings on this thread. I had repeatedly received a message that my replies
could not be posted and that I was to "try again later" - with the result
that you now see.

It will take a few days to work through your suggestions and I will
certainly post again when I have something to report.

With renewed thanks for your professionalism,

Robert.

The error message you are encountering when you post is referring to
the "Notification" getting posted in your profile rather than your
newsgroup post.

Should you encounter the message again disregard, log off and log back
on, and locate your post later and use the "Notify me of Replies"
option if you want to receive notifications for replies.

If this becomes a nuisance then try using the Office portal, which
should have this issue rectified, to access the newsgroups instead:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/com...&cr=US&dg=microsoft.public.word.docmanagement

If you are already using the Office portal and are encountering the
error message then please let us know so we can pass this information
on to Microsoft.

Also, after my previous reply I created this article on the specific
type of error you are encountering and it may be a little clearer than
the instructions in my post. It will certainly print out better if you
need printed instructions:

Having followed most of the help provided by Beth Melton and Graham Mayor I
have found the culprit. The C++ runtime error was in the MS Works Suite of
which MS Word is a part in the XP Home Edition configuration. The two
applications seem to be linked by this Add-in which was malfunctioning.
Navigating Control Panel - Add or Remove programs I was easily able to
re-install the add-in, and Word has worked properly ever since.

Grateful thanks to the above MVPs who richly deserve their title.

Thanks for the update, Robert. :)

Incidentally, the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in" is notorious for
creating conflicts in Word. It's know to cause numerous errors, clears
the Windows Clipboard when Word starts, over/under populates the Mail
Merge command under the Tools menu, those are just the main issues.

If you aren't using the Works Suite Add-In functionality:
- Works Task Launcher
- Works Mail Merge functionality, (i.e. if you are using Works Address
book)
- Word to Works converter
- Works templates

Then I recommend you uninstall it and leave it uninstalled.

Also, would you mind sharing which method you used to help you find
the add-in?

The add-in is notoriously buggy and does little of any real use, so you may
find that you don't miss it if you uninstall it again and leave it
uninstalled.
