possible virus, help!

I had windows 98 on my computer, I instaled some soft ware from the internet and forgot to enable my virus protection, when it did not fucntion I uninstaled it. Now when I try to get in to my computer I can't. I installed windows xp and I still can not get into my control panel and my present version of my virus protection will not instal. I get a message that reads windows has to shut down an error has occurred. What can I do short of replacing my mother board?

Reformat your harddrive and do a fresh installation of Windows 98/XP.

Try this Disable system restore. restart system, hit
f8 during bootup and go into safe mode. run virus scan.
restart system enable system restore.
