virus

I know my system has a virus, as I am unable to access my control panel or
make any security changes. However, this operating system is currently
without virus protection and I can not install new protection as after
installation I get an error message stating there is not enough memory to
complete this application. Please close other programs and try again. I know
I am only using a quarter of my total operating memory but don't know how to
fix this! I have tried downloading Modzilla Firefox to use a different
operating system, but again my computer tells me there is not enough memory
to complete this application. HELP!!

Add to TaurArian, if you can't access the internet because this virus will
try not allow you and block the websites, then it is good idea to download a
Virus Scanner from a friend Computer on floppys/CD (prefer both) and try Scan
in Safe Mode by Pressing F8 many times on start up until you get the Start up
options [menu] window for MS to select which start up, select Safe Mode and
scan there from A floppy drive (the only option)?.
After that whatever the Scanner and Spyware removal will detect and delete,
reboot and start in normal mode and do a full scan.
Good luck
please let us know

You will need to clean up your computer first. Follow these steps,
including all preparatory work:

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Get the antivirus/antimalware tools from a different, known-clean
computer that has a cd burner, or have a usb thumbdrive with enough
capacity to transfer the files. I don't recommend using online virus
scanners on a known-infected machine.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this - take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local version of BigStoreUSA).

I was able to run a remote scan thru the bit scan link. Quite happy about
that as it did delete a dll extension file that I could not erradicate. (as
well as a trojan and three virus'). However, I am still unable to download a
spy bot or other program as I am still getting the "unable to start this
program, not enough memory." I have not yet tried going in under safe
operating, but I guess that's next!

Thanks for the help, let me know if you have other suggestions. Also, the
trend micro link is not active any longer.

Hi just tried the Trend link and it is working for me. Oh well.

If you have enough physical memory then there might be something that's eating
up the memory available.
Perhaps examine what is starting up in the Taskmanager etc.

All about disabling programs at startup

Also see:
www.dougknox.com
Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This utility tracks the common
startup vectors and will show you what is loading at startup and from where. The
included Help gives a brief tutorial with some good information on removing the
entries that the program finds.
