Possible to decrease missing network drive timeout?

A

I usually don't connect all network drives or shut down my laptop
before taking it off the LAN. When I attempt (inadvertently) to access
a missing network drive, there is a very long delay before the error
dialog pops up. Likewise, if I right click on the network drive to
disconnect it, there is a very long delay before the right-click menu
pops up and I can select disconnect. I assume during these long delays
the OS keeps retrying the network connection. Is there any way to
reduce the number of retries or length of time it will retry? Or is
there some other likely cause of the long delay?

(Note this is *not* related to the autodisconnect network drive
timeout -- what I'm trying to do here is reduce the length of time the
OS tries to connect to a network drive, not alter the inactivity
timeout after which a network drive will be disconnected).
