Hello. I posted this at microsoft.public.windows.server.networking but
I got no responses. Any help would be appreciated:

Hello. I was told that it is possible to connect to a network share
from Windows XP with only TCP/IP installed and no "Client for Microsoft
Networks". I uninstalled the client but now I am unable to connect to
network shares on our NT 4 server or our Windows 2003 server. Can
anyone tell me if there is something I need to change on the server
side or was the information I was given incorrect? That is, do I need
to keep the "client for microsoft networks" installed on the XP
computer? Also, if you could point me to documentation I would
appreciate it.

Thanks.

Mark,

You don't need File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the client,
nor do you need Client for Microsoft Networks on the server. You do require
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the server, and Client for
Microsoft Networks on the client.

You can connect to a server using only TCP/IP, ie "direct hosting". This will
do without NetBIOS Over TCP/IP. This will not do without Client for Microsoft
Networks on the client. And if you use direct hosting, make sure that your
firewalls are adjusted properly!
