Popup blocker //

I have the popup blocker disabled at Tools \ Internet Options \ Security \
Custom Levels \ Use Popup Blocker \ Disable

Yet at Tools \ Popup Blocker and it's settings there it shows enabled?

Turning it off or on at either place has no bearing on the other.

What's the deal with that?

Microsoft still wants people to run Opera or Firebird browsers?

Hello,

I would recommend getting rid of the pop up blocker all together, the only
reason why you have pop-ups is because you have adware/spyware/hijackers on
you computer. If you remove those then you wont need the pop up blocker.

I would recommend looking into getting one of these to help you out with you
problem:

Spyware / Adware / Hijackers

Thanks for your concern. HOWEVER - How do your opinions (errant ones at
that) address the question/issue I asked?

I strongly disagree; while I do think that spyware prevention/removal
software is needed, I think your initial statement is inaccurate. Many,
many websites deliver popup advertisements when the page is loaded and/or
when the viewer exits the page. Try going to http://www.cnn.com - I bet
you'll either get a popup or have your blocker notify you that one was
blocked. Popups are not generated solely by adware, and usually
popup-blockers won't block adware ads anyway (in my experience), as one
doesn't need a main browser window open to receive the advertisements.

You can not remove the IE Pop-up blocker when you have installed Service
Pack 2. It is built-in to IE 6 in SP2.

I'm beginning to think the popup blocker is a menace. I have it disabled
under my Tools \ Internet Options \ Security \ Custom Lever \ Use Popup
Blocker
AND I have it turned off at Tools \ Turn off Popup Blocker AND the Show
Information Bar . . . . IS disabled
and yet -

The popup bar still shows and it shows when I simply open an htm file on my
system - one that I authored.

I didn't beta test this new sp2 but I've tested past Operating systems and
upgrades there to and It's quite obvious to me that SP2 does indeed have
some bugs in it.

I could site a couple more but this is not the time.

Why isn't the popup blocker disabled/turned off when I have it set such?
Please NO lectures about security. I understand that issue just as well as
anyone that wants to reply such. I'm talking about a disabled/turned off
popup blocker functioning when I open a file that's on my computer!

lol, well you're going to get a security lecture anyway.

Most casrs are stolen because they are unlocked, many are setting in the
drive way or parking lot with motor running.

And I'm sure the drivers thoht it was a big menace to follow proper
automobile operation.
Turn off all electrical accessories especially lights, roll up windows, put
in park, set emergency brake, turn off and take keys out, store valuables in
trunk or take inside, lock all doors and my fav, the wife should not yell
out across the parking lot, "Honey! Did you get hide my purse. I have my
money and credit cards in it."

Neo, you have bigger problems to worry about. :)

So - You haven't a clue has to how to prevent the pesky thing from blocking

Thanks for telling us that. Most people that respond here are lease make a

No, I didn't but I do now. :)
You told me you couldn't and frankly scarlette,
you should have read the help file. :)

R-click on Info Bar
Select Information Bar Help
Read down the right side details and you will see that...

there are many types of messages and conditions blocked.
You only turned off one or two conditions.

You must turn them all off to make the Info bar turn off.

It is highly recommended that you NOT do this.
You might be better off to add your local files to the trusted or local
zone? But if the HTML pages have links that go out to the internet they will
probably be blocked and poped according to the rules set.

:)

To avoid receiving the info bar notification when your homepage is set to a
file on your harddrive, you can use a "mark of the web." You can put the
following HTML comment at the beginning of your html homepage: "<!-- saved
from url=(0021)http://www.google.com -->" The URL can be anything, but just
make sure the number in parens equals the number of characters in the URL.
This worked famously for me.

BTDT -

That aside - the issue still remains.

Disabling the blocker in ANY location (Security settings and/or Turn off at
it's own sub-menu) should do JUST THAT!

There must be something in the word "disable" or "turn off' that Microsoft
has a hard time understanding.

--

N

Neo Anderson

Thanks Tony. That's a good work around.

However, one shouldn't HAVE to resort to such. Disabling the popup blocker
and/or turning it off should do just that!

I was told prior to my SP2 install, ad nauseam, that I if I didn't want to
have the security crap and the popup blocker bothering me I could "simple
disable them"!

WELL - That was a bold faced LIE!

I can neither get the popup blocker totally disabled nor can I totally get
the security warning that occasionally shows an icon in the system tray
stopped.

Over a dozen phone calls to MS help (4 different 'cases') and nearly a dozen
emails and both issues remain.

The issues are not just one system specific. I have an xp home and a xp pro
system and the issue is relative on both. My son has two xp home systems
and he has the same issues. My neighbor has an xp pro system and he has the
same issue.

Aye, I hear you - I agree that options MS offers for their browser or OS
should be able to be easily worked around, if the user desires to do so.
Sometimes it seems to me like various companies try to help too much and
force the user to do things he/she might not want to do. I understand where
they come from, but still, it would be nice to allow the user some say-so in
what their machine does.

S

SlowJet

In the mean time, SlowJet and millions of others enjoy running applications
on Windows Xp Sp2 without being bothered by popup's, banner's, activtiveX,
flashers, hijackers, adware, spyware, virus and surveys.:)
