popping and cracking noises

I am at my wits end with this annoying poping and cracking noise coming
from my speakers. These noises just started out of the blue a couple of weeks
ago. At first the pops were few and far between, now it happens all the time,
whether I was playing sound or not, and starts before XP even plays it's
start-up sound. The only times I can get rid of the sound are when I check
the box to allow only 1 digital output, uninstall the driver, turn off the
speakers, or turn off the computer. All are equally useless ways to solve my
problem as I can not hear anything out of the speaker after preforming any of
these tasks.
I have updated the drivers, rolled back the drivers, uninstalled and
reinstalled the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled the soundcard, moved the
sound card to a new slot, and tried new speakers. All to no avail.
So, what's the deal with this noise? What should I try now? Can anyone
throw me a line? I'm drowning here!

hi,
Look at yor hard disk indicator, does the sound occur when there is disk
activity?, i have had this problem also, it only hapens to me when i have
both a micraphone and speakers connected, it seems to be interferance from
the hard disk, although this may not be the same for you.

Regards, Mark

The sounds happen all the time. No matter what the computer is doing. ANd I
have no microphone hooked up.
