have the pop-up advertisers developed new tactics ? I saw a news item that
said they have figured a way to get past pop-up blocking. I have also been
seeing pop-ups again.

Spammers and their ilk are *always* developing new tactics. To be perfectly
frank, probably the most efficient method for controlling pop-ups is to use
a browser other than IE.

I'm fairly certain I was using firefox at the time. I use it for everything
except windows sites.

ah ... maybe you got the pop-ups based on flash. I have seen some
recently as well. Disable flash plugin and see if you still see the
popups. There is a flashblocker (or something like this) plugin for
Firefox that will let you choose if you want a certain flash animation
to be played.

yeah it was definitely using firefox, just got it again @ learn2type.com

This site uses fly-ins, pop-ups and pop-unders, all of which, I thought,
FireFox would stop. I went there with IE 6 (SP2) and it caught them all.
Go figure.

Most pop-up blockers will catch these, though.

How do you disable flash plug-in Firefox ?

Well, the brute force method is to uninstall Macromedia flash altogether
from your system. This will work if you don't want to see any flash
animations at all.

To disable the plugin, here is a way:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/flash.html#win-uninstall

However, if you want flash selective want to filter the ads of your
choice, then two methods will work (or a combination of both) without
the need to uninstall flash:
The Adblock (http://adblock.mozdev.org/)
Flashblock (http://flashblock.mozdev.org/)

It would be quite interesting to know how it works out for you,
Sam.

Hardly...it's just a fact of life. As a result of market saturation, IE is
*the* target for advertisers. In the same fashion that Windows is *the*
target for hackers.

What do I use? Windows XP Pro and IE. But I also use the IE pop-up
blocker, as well as ZA Security Suite and Ad-Aware SE Pro among others.

I don't "blame" IE (or Windows for that matter), I just recognize it's
vulnerabilities.

yeah, he was a little trigger-happy 4 i.e. there wasn't he ? i followed up on
the link
provided by Sam. (thanks, Sam) then went back to the site and didn't catch
the flash. starting to look forward to i.e.7 this summer.
