POP-UPS

Getting pop ups now, even when I'm not connected using
Explorer. They are advertising a pop up site, (or so they
claim). This pop up looks like a standard window, with How
can I figure out if this is a virus, a pop up, or a
ligitimate microsoft reminder to get a pop up stopper? If
the latter, how could it start appearing without prior
pemission. Also is there anything microsoft offes to
combat these pop-ups,stop them.

Most likely you are talking about the "messenger Service" in Windows XP.

You can just enable XP's built in firewall to stop them. -

If it's not the messenger service and turning on the XP Firewall doesn't
help, then you should download and run the freeware Ad-aware. It's here;
scroll down to the "Ad-aware 6 Standard Edition" and then choose a place to
get a full install from.
