poor quality dvd burn

I have a sony mini dv tr33 camcorder ,i have edited home movie footage in
wmm2 and then transfered it back to dv tape.
Having since acquired dvd editing program (windvd) a new 16x pioneer dvr
108 ,and a firewire port from and old editing package "dazzle" i have put the
tape via the firewire port into the windvd program ,added chapters etc and
successfully burnt to an 8x verbatim dvd-r disc.
The problem is the quality of the finished dvd is very poor ,
All i want to do is edit my recording with wmm2 and then burn to dvd using
windvd to get a clear proffessionally looking home movie on dvd.
Any ideas what im doing wrong or any better ways to inhance picture
quality.i use all the AVI settings for best quality i have service pack 2
downloaded as well.
Many thanks.

The quality of your DVD will depend a lot on the rendered quality of the
MPEG-2 files that go onto it.... most consider TMPGEnc the best software to
use for the highest quality short of professional software/hardware. There's
a link to it on my DVD Software > Intro page... and a link to a tutorial
about configuring it.
