Poll.. How many virus email's you get today?

It gives the ability to read emails without downloading from the server.
Therefor you can sort them manually and only download what you want.

Not much point as one still pays to download them.

Pegasus has an option to screen subject headers before downloading
(and delete any on the server that are unacceptable). The selection
process is fast, but with a dial-up connection it can take a while to
load the headers and for the deletion process to occur. My ISP took
care of Swen, so I've never experienced a huge onset of undesirable
mail.

Today... none... because I deleted the email account that I used on the
newsgroups.

Before that.... about 1000 every 6 hours. So if you've only gotten 40 or
so, think yourself lucky, MVPs have been inundated with them...

I'm down to only a few a day, none for several hours now.

-----Original Message-----
I have been getting 30-40 145kb files claiming to be from microsoft security
and other similiar names.

How many are you getting?

.
I've been lucky from what I hear, I only recieved 15
over the weekend, but some have had hundreds a day!!!!

Is there a way to set the download rules so that emails with attachments
from people not in your address are rejected?
I've had dozens in the last week.

Look at mail rules in OE. Yes you can.

BUT you still pay to download them. If you're a yank realise that I pay partially for you internet (the world pays about 30% of american's internet charges), as all non americans do.

OK I looked at rules but can see no way of excluding attachments from people
that arn't in my address book.
Me a yank, what a thought! LOL

My ISP's boss - US based - managed to run company debts up to $12B and then had the whole lot 'wiped' out - we are still paying about 40% of our charges to the US even now.

Non US countries pay to download from the USA. US download for free from the rest of the world.

well at least they are going to my hotmail account..
but since i use this account for online merchants, and they send emails from
differing accounts within, i have to keep the bulk mail folder to catch
those message i may miss.
Gee, Mines slowed down to only 120 or so per day. And thats WITH the earthlink
spamblocker set on HIGH.. Hence the munged email from now on.

Has anybody considered that unless a global fix is found for this
problem, email as we've come to know it could become basically unusable?

I have based my OE rule on content, and so far this has netted all of
those messages. The rule says that any message in which the sender
does not appear in my Address Book, and includes any of the following
strings (words) in the content -

undelivered
undeliverable
September 2003, cumulative patch

Gets moved to my suspected spam folder. I dont know how, but OE does
not seem to recognise that there is an attachment (usually .zl*)
although it is plainly right there? Anyway my rule above has so far
been 100% effective.

HTH

A silly oversight as it would solve all these problems with one rule without
having to know beforehand what text was in the message.

Bah, humbug.

Zone Alarm changed the file name to *.zl*, why should OE recognize it as
being harmful?

ZoneAlarm! Of course, I should have made that connection. I'll have
a look and see what can be done.

None. A few days ago email came from my ISP saying that they were
taking care of the situation. I think I should send them a thank you
note.

I thought I was the only one. I'm used to the Mac community where this
kind of thing doesn't happen and have just bought a PC with XP. I was
niaive enough to register it and then the emails started. 300 - 400 a
day all with 150K attachments. Microshit won't help unless I pay and the
dealer is 'doing what he can'. Looks like I'll have to change my email
address which is on all my stationery and colour corporate stuff. I'm
really pissed off.

As many of these viruses will be forwarded from people you DO know it's
usefulness might be limited.

But you can do this by making two rules

1:
In conditions select "Where the message has an attachment"
Select "Where the from line contains people"
Select people and open your address book.
Select all names in your addess book (with shift key and scroll)
Add them to the list
Then in "Select actions for your rule" choose "Stop Processing More rules"

2:
In conditions select "Where the message has an attachment"
Then in "Select actions for your rule" choose "Delete it" or "Do not
download it from the server" or whatever you want to do with these messages.

Make sure these rules are places in your rule list in the above order.

Thanks for the help.
FYI none of these have come from people in my address book. (They are a
pretty clued up mob).
Thanks again.
