About half of what you're getting, but way too many. I'm
deleting them directly from my POP 3 server.

None.

Perhaps also, I don't give out my email address to anyone. I have never seen
these bogus MS virus thingys. In fact, I don't think I've ever been infected
with a virus to date.

Greetings --

None. I don't post my email address in a fashion usable by
spambots.

3600 so far today and 9307 yesterday. I can't find genuine e-mails in all
that! I have rules in place and RoadRunner filters out the viruses before
they get to me but I still have to delete the e-mails manually. RR doesn't
allow delete from Server option.

That is great, wish mine would do that. However, they do send me a notice
that there is a potential there and then allow me to go into their server
and delete from there, So, they never reach my computer. It is just a pain
in the bottom to have to do this.

A few hundred. Coming in batches of 30-50. Dropped down today to 5 or so every few hours. I spent the weekend telnetting to the mail server and typoing
dele 1
dele 2
dele 3
....
dele 70

over and over again. Still 7 viruses is 20c of download charges. So I saved a few dollars by deleting off the server.

well at least they are going to my hotmail account..
but since i use this account for online merchants, and they send emails from
differing accounts within, i have to keep the bulk mail folder to catch
those message i may miss.

Candace,

but I and a lot of other people need attachments. This is not *the*
answer, no matter how many times it's repeated.

Not much point as one still pays to download them.

Kill them on the sever before the download. Software is available to do
that.

How many "you get" is not really relevant unless one is trying to get
some measure of the level of computer-savy-ness of one's email
acquaintances and the visibility of your email to the spammers who
harvest your email.

This is because the number you receive is probably only a function of
how your email address get's propagated around to machines which
generate this junk which depends on how widely distributed your email
address is in distribution lists on other peoples' infected machines.
The more of your email acquaintances who don't practice safe computing,
the more emails like this will get.

More important and relevant is how many times did you get infected and
was your email bandwidth pipe adversely affected. And if you didn't get
infected and your bandwidth was not adversely affected, why?

If an attachment is expected and you know what it is there
is nothing wrong with attachments. BUT knowing is not
always easy. If you have been sent an email that says, I
will be sending an email, with subject such and such, total
size about and you know the person, then it is probably OK
to open that email attachment after scanning it.

But to open an attachment just because it comes from a known
person is no protection because all the viruses now use
harvested email addresses.

I did, it's called telnet.

To play with telnet and mail
Start it and connect to your mail server (mail.myisp.com) and port 110
and type (send yourself a mail first - or it's a boring example)

user <your email user name> eg user fred
pass <your email password> eg pass password
stat
list (with optional message ID eg list 1)
retr 1
quit

DELE 1 would delete the message with ID 1
RSET undeletes messages (messages marked with DELE are deleted when the quit
command is given Rset unmarks messahges for deletion)
NOOP Does nothing

And that is POP3 basic, and the full command set (there are optional ones).
So toss out OE and get going with telneting to your mail server.

250 got through yesterday on my automatic connect/collect email&news
sessions (I was out) .. after I got back I set up filters at my ISP and
headed off ~1300 more before they downloaded. That makes it the worse
virus attack by about 2 orders of magnitude .. perhaps because this one
specifically targets newsgroup posters.
