i know that windows xp is known to crash, but mine does
quite often, a blue screen comes up with a bunch of
writing then it restarts

Try the following:

We want to implement the Clenaboot process using MSCONFIG to rule out 3rd
party software as the cause of this issue. MSCONFIG from XP can be used on a
Windows 2000 Pro or Server client.

Go to Start\Run type in Msconfig and press OK.
Go to the Startup tab.
Click on "Disable All"
Go to the Services Tab
Click on "Hide all Microsoft Services"
Uncheck the 3rd party services that are left
Press OK twice to reboot.

Once your computer is restarted see if the issue still occurs. if it still
does go to Msconfig and select Enable All on the startup tab.
If the issue does not occur go to the Startup tab and select items 4 at a
time or so with reboots in between to narrow down the exact item causing
your problem.

Quite the contrary. Windows XP is far and away the most stable
evrsion of Windows I've ever seen. I have had it running on two
machines here almost every day since it was first released, and
it hasn't crashed a single time on either one.

If you're looking for help, you need to tell us what the "bunch
of writing" says. If it doesn't stay up long enough to copy it
down, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. On the
"Advanced" tab, under "Startup and Recovery," click "Settings,"
then under "System failure," uncheck the box "Automatically
restart." That will prevent it restarting and keep the blue
screen up.
