If you are smart at this stuff, please take pity on a very sick guy (on
medical leave from being a reporter at USA Today) who's having brain surgery
next month & cannot access any of the data in his laptop. Trying to solve
ANOTHER technical problem (which I'll tell you if you want to know), I was
told I should re-install Microsoft Windows XP. I ran the CD "Operating
System: Already Installed On Your Computer: Reinstallation CD: Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2." When I tried to log on afterwards, I
got stuck in the loop from hell. Windows XP showed this message: "Windows
Product Activation. This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft
before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?" When I click
"No," I get sent back to the Welcome screen. When I click "Yes," I get this
message: "Activate Windows: msoobe.exe - Application Error. The instruction
at '0x772637b4' referenced memory at '0x00000000'. The memory could not be
'written.' " My choices then are to "Click on OK to terminate the program" or
"Click on CANCEL to debug the program." It doesn't matter which of those I
click, though; they both send me back to the Welcome screen. I have found
several postings on the web of others who've been stuck in the same loop, but
no solutions. I can get into stuff via Safe mode but can't debug it or
anything else. Please help. P.S.: I REALLY appreciate it. Thanks.

The problem, I believe, is that you weren't hooked up to the internet
when you reinstalled. Here is how I solved the problem. With your
windows disc in the cdrom, your wifi on, and your machine in range of
an ip, changed the boot order (hit f2 after you turn the machine on)
on the machine. When the machine reboots, choose to repair the
previous installation. After it reinstalls the necessary components
your machine will automatically reboot. Make sure that you say that
you want to register immediately. Your machine will automatically
contact microsoft with your registration info. and you should be o.k.
thereafter. For the record, I went to safe mode and shut down my
trend security (through control panel - services) and norton ghost
before I did the reinstall. hope this helps
