Slow Operation on HP Laptop with AMD Turion 64

Hi I'm here on behalf of my friend, he has above mentioned laptop which is
running extremely slow, on startup and during general operation. It's not
always been this slow- not sure what's causing it. So far I've installed AVG
Free, Spybot Search and Destroy, Windows Defender and CCleaner, run all
programs but to no avail. When we look into Add/ Remove Programs there is a
massive blank entry. Also all sounds including the Welcome sound when logging
on to windows are stuttered. Is this a windows problem or does he need to get
hardware sorted out at a shop? The laptop was bought new about 6 months ago,
and any help would be most appreciated.

The Turions are normally very fast, if a little power-hungry compared to
Intel equivalents.

First thing I'd check is for preinstalled junk. Norton/Symantec in
particular.

Hi Ian,

Thank you for your reply- but I've already done that prior to running the
programs I mentioned- I think the problem arises from a huge void in the
Add/Remove programs list... do you know what might be the cause of this? I've
run CCleaner to try and get rid of it but no joy so far...?
