pls help

My winxp pro has a plugnplay problem. When I switch on my
external modem or let it on before booting, xp shutsdown
automatically without notice. The external modem is
connected by USB. I have also checked for viruses,
malwares, etc. I ve checked with the modem, adapter, Usb,
etc. its fine. can anyone help me how to resolve the
plugnplay problem?

Did you connect the modem to another computer?
How do you know it is fine?
Does the modem need a NIC connection?
Why didn't you use a NIC card?
Why are you using an adapter?
