What do you mean "plugged in"? Do you mean you have an internal pci
modem and when you have it plugged into the telephone jack and
initialize the modem, your computer shuts down? Or do you mean you have
an external modem and when you plug it into your computer, the machine
shuts down?

In either case, it sounds like you have a hardware problem. Some things
to check:

1. Try a different phone jack.
2. Try a different cable.
3. Update the modem drivers.
4. Try the modem in a different pci slot, if internal.
5. Try a different modem.

Obviously, you want to try one thing at a time and test afterwards.

Is this an external modem, Jerome? Either way, before dialing up, go to the
Device Manager, scroll down to modems, right click and select - Scan for
hardware changes and then try to connect.

If this is the issue, I have an edit that you place in your startup folder
for this on line 317 (right hand side):
