PLLease someone-how do i restore compress files option????

when i run disk cleanup (windows xp ) the last option/box
to tick- "compress files"- is missing!!!..its the one
that appears underneath 'catalogue files for the content
indexer'. Everything i have read points to removing this
feature to prevent disk cleanup from hanging up, but i
would like to restore it and cannot remember how/why/when
it disappeared??!!! Help please.
