Hangup on Compress Old Files

L

Lindsay Graham

When I've run Disk Cleanup in the past, I've not bothered with the option to
'Compress Old Files'. But now that Disk Cleanup says that 'Compress Old
Files' can save 2GB, I thought I should try it. I've tried twice, but both
times the computer has frozen very soon after it started the operation.

A brief search of newsgroups has not revealed any solutions. Can someone
suggest what might be going wrong?

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to
the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and
selecting Edit.

Are you sure it's hanging up, or are you just being too impatient? The "not
responding" message is a misnomer; it does NOT mean the program will not
respond, only that it's too busy to right now.
With 2 Gig, that could take a long time to compress; how long are you
waiting for it? How are you decideing that it's hung up?

I don't get the 'not responding' message, the screen and the cursor just
hang up altogether. Nothing (including Ctrl Alt Del) elicits a response.
I'm a very patient person, so I wait a long time, and do other things while
I'm waiting, but it is definitely a hang up.
