disk cleanup compress old files not working

When i run the disk cleanup the compress old files does not work.
i think that a registry cleanup program messed up the program.

any way to reset this so that it runs? does it really help computer to
compress the old files?

Don't use a registry cleaner. They do little good and usually cause more
problems than they fix.
