Hello,

I am having a small problem that I would like to describe and
hopefully receive some help with.

Disk Cleanup/Compress Old Files

The problem I have is that I have a set amount of files on the
"Compress Old Files" line within Disk Cleanup that will not compress.

Disk Cleanup does not freeze, as I have seen a fix for in several
places. It finishes and works fine, except for always leaving some
files that will not compress.

It is 29 MB's of files that will not compress, they are always there,
that amount, I mean. Anything over that will compress fine. Say that
it says there are 39 MB's that can be compressed, 10 MB's will be
compressed and it will be back down to the "always there" 29 MB's that
will not compress.

I have tried running Disk Cleanup in safe mode and I have also tried
the workaround where you delete the Volume Cache Key in the Registry,
neither worked.

Does anyone have a suggestion that I could try?

Thanks,

Altie

29MB is really not very much space. That's the size of the RAM back in '94. I
would just leave it uncompressed. It's not really doing any harm to the
system, and like a lot of people say, if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Jonathan, I realize it is not much space, if the solution to the
problem is too convoluted I may not pursue it. Although, if anyone
did know why this would happen I would be glad to hear about it to see
if I can correct it.

Thanks

If you post the names of the files that are not being compressed I may be
able to tell you why it is not working. They may be system files, have
read-only attributes, or there may just be a problem with your hard drive.

Some files just won't compress (they are already as compressed as they can
get).
