Please Help with this ERROR

P

Paul Black

I'm running Win XP Home. Recently, the last couple of weeks I
am getting a strange error message at start up: <SPRINGFLD_ADV_DAEMON:
WksCal.exe - Entry Point not found. The procedure entry point Get IUMS
could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL>. Clicking
OK on this message closes it and creates no further problems, as I can
see so far.
Why am I getting this message and how do I correct this error please.

Also my computer freezes at startup. I have to turn it off and then on
again to get it to work.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
All the Best.

Hi Paul, a quick little read here, that might resolve your problem

Thanks for the reply OJ.

I did a search of my "C" drive and came up with two MSDART.DLL files :-

(1) C:\Windows\System32
Version 2.71.9030.0
Created 13/01/2004
Size 124KB

(2) C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
Version 2.71.9030.0
Created 12/09/2002
Size 124KB

Therefore there does NOT seem to be a conflict with different Versions.
Is there anything else that I can do please.

All the Best.

Your version of the msdart.dll file is an old one, which doesn't contain the
particular function (GetIUMS) that the Works Calendar program is looking
for.

So you'll either need to upgrade your version of the file eg by installing
recent XP service packs / updates

or upgrade to MDAC 2.8
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/downloads/default.aspx

Alternatively / in addition, you could stop the Works calendar function
from starting up at startup (eg via Start > run > msconfig > startup (tab)
or from within Microsoft Works itself), if you don't use it.

Thanks for the reply Jon.

I did as you suggested ...

"stop the Works calendar function from starting up at startup (eg via
Start > run > msconfig > startup (tab)"

and unchecked the "Works Calendar" box and clicked "Apply".
I then restarted my computer and had to pick a option. Seeing it
defaulted to "Selective Startup" ( I can't remember what it was before,
what is normal ) I used that, and restarted my computer. I got exactly
the same message.

I tried to go into "Microsoft Works Calendar" but it would NOT let me
in and gave me the same message.

I don't even use "Works".

I have Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 1. Can I download the
MDAC 2.8 Upgrade ...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/mdac/downloads/default.aspx
.... even though I have NOT downloaded Service Pack 2.

Thanks for all your help.
It is appreciated.
All the Best.

Hi Paul

If you're still getting the msdart.dll error message on startup, after
unchecking the WksCal.exe entry via msconfig, then that suggests that you
have a another startup entry somewhere (possibly more than one), that is
still causing the WksCal.exe program to startup.

You may need to do a more in-depth analysis of your startup entries to
locate the culprits

Programs like Startuplist
http://www.download.com/StartupList/3000-2094_4-10379545.html

and Autoruns
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

can help you to do that.

Multiple startup entries would also be something characteristic of spyware /
malware, so I would recommend a scan of your system using something like
Spybot, if you have not done so, already
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

The release manifest for MDAC 2.8 suggests that it should install ok,
without SP2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;828396
(the same may not be true of MDAC 2.8 Service Pack 1, though (?) )

Download link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en

Take the usual precautions of setting a System Restore point, if you decide
to install it, for reversibilty's sake.

Thanks for the reply Jon.

I checked the ...

"stop the Works calendar function from starting up at startup (eg via
Start > run > msconfig > startup (tab)"

.... was still UNCHECKED this morning and it was CHECKED again.
Plus the "Selective Startup" from last night had been changed to
"Normal".

I downloaded a tool from microsoft which did a scan and said that I
have ...
MDAC 2.7 SP1 on Windows XP SP1
.... as the latest Version on my computer.

I have NOT tried Startuplist, Autoruns or SpyBot as yet because I don't
like downloading things if I can help it.

Thanks once again for your help and assistance.
All the Best.

Hi Paul

If you're not keen on downloading things, then the only other thing I can
suggest is to manually work through some of the advice given on websites
such as the following

Google link
http://tinyurl.com/dvcst

or the same link, if it survives the wordwrap

http://www.google.com/search?as_q=s...s_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&safe=active

to explore the various registry keys and files that can often contain
startup entries. It would be a lengthy procedure, but you would certainly be
an expert in startup locations by the end of it!!

Yes, it should upgrade you to MDAC 2.8, and the immediate problem of the
error messages would, hopefully also disappear.

Thanks Jon.

One Final Question Please.
How would I know if my computer is a x86-based computer.

Much appreciated.

Right click on My Computer, select Properties, if it says Intel or AMD
or P4 or AMD, it's x86 based.

Leythos,

Thanks for the instructions.
I did as you suggested and it said Intel Celeron Procesor.

Jon,

I downloaded the file you suggested.
It downloaded, installed, and restarted my computer.
And guess what?, NO MSDART.DLL Message.
Thanks for ALL your help and time on this.

All the Best.
