All the Error Reports are no more recent than August 2005. Aren't there
any from the last week? Are there any entries of any Event Type being
logged when you reboot?

Hope this helps.

Sorry Paul I don't see a solution there. I appreciate you must have put
a lot of effort into gathering together the Reports.

I am wondering whether your computer is overheating.

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about your
computer:
Everest Home Edition is an interesting (freeware) source of information:
http://www.lavalys.hu/index.php

Download and install it. A sub-folder of "Computer" named Sensor
provides this sort of information:

Sensor Properties:
Sensor Type VIA 686 Internal
(ISA 6000h)

Temperatures:
Motherboard 30 °C (86 °F)
CPU 52 °C (126 °F)
Aux 23 °C (73 °F)
Seagate ST340014A 40 °C (104 °F)

Cooling Fans:
CPU 4821 RPM
Chassis 2766 RPM

Voltage Values:
CPU Core 1.62 V
+2.5 V 2.44 V
+3.3 V 3.18 V
+5 V 4.98 V
+12 V 11.81 V
Debug Info V 81 BD 92 88 CD
C8 C9 C5

Can you post your details leaving out those relating to voltage.

If you place the cursor on Sensor and select Quick Report, Plain Text
you can copy and paste the details into your message.

Who is the manufacturer of your hard disk?

Spyware causes many problems. If not installed download Adaware and / or
update Reference file
from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove
parasites.

Don't know the full story on this (just picked up a plea from Gerry on
another group) but as I understand it, the pc freezes after a few minutes.

Have you tried to isolate the OS, (don't know what OS you are using) but the
first thing to check would be the pc itself.

Try booting with a Startup floppy (preferably a WinMe start-up disk as it's
the most comprehensive) and let it run to the Help page. Scroll up & down
the screen (using the arrow keys) and keep it running for a few hours if
necessary. If the pc still freezes, then the OS AND the HDD can be
eliminated from the likely causes.

See how it behaves and come back with the results and we can take it from
there.

I repeatedly send the requested ERROR REPORTS to MS

NOTHING HAPPENS--so why ask me for information?

It is the lack of SERVICE that annoys one

This newsgroup is not Microsoft. Many of those who read newsgroups are
interested in helping others with computer problems find solutions. If
you don't post information how can anyone start to help you? You're
shooting yourself in the foot!

Paul, sorry I wasn't able to help but should you need to go down that route
at some future time, you can download an image of WinMe Startup Disk and
make one for yourself from www.bootdisk.com (be sure to read the
instructions) and use the OEM version.

Good luck and I hope you soon resolve the problem.

confuzzled

I've just picked up this thread and have some ideas.

1: You say you have had Nortons for a number of years. It sounds like
you are still running the old version (even if you have the latest
signatures).

How about a second opinion? Uninstall Nortons, and download AVG from
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 - it is reputable and
(smile) free, and do a full scan of all drives.

2: Did AdAware show any infestations? Even with the latest version?

3: The symptoms of your system freezing after being shut down for a
while, and starting well afterwards sound like the battery on your
motherboard that keeps the settings alive during power down may be on
its last legs. It is usually a CR2032 or CR2025 lithium 3volt battery
cell. Check your motherboard manual or have a peek in the box for the
exact model. Buy a fresh one from the chemist (they are very cheap and
common), restart your computer and take careful written notes of *all
*the settings in BIOS (usually accessed by pressing the DEL key during
startup before Windows starts). The notes will come in handy when you
remove the old battery (make sure the power is off when you do this)
and slip the new one in its place, as you will have to re-enter them
back in as they are lost during battery replacement. Make sure the
replacement battery goes in the same way up as the old one went out
unless you want an expensive doorstop.

These batteries can last for anything from six months to ten years,
depending on the heat and power stresses applied. Cheap and quick to
replace, they have solved a many 'hard to start' type problems over the
years for my customers.

4: Seriously consider updating to XP SP2 - there are numerous hidden
patches and fixes that improve system stability and security. If there
were major problems early in the release cycle, they have certainly
been resolved and patched in the 15 months since it was released. As a
byproduct, any missing or corrupt system files, drivers and registry
settings will most likely be updated and fixed during the update
process. The download is about 70Mb or pay the few bucks to Microsoft
for a disc in the post. Don't forget to ask at your local electrical
retailer (the local Harvey Norman, Retravision and Dick Smith types) if
they have a spare Microsoft SP2 update disk lying in the back cupboard
somewhere - Microsoft distributed boxes of them to most retailers last
year to give away to their customers - and you may get lucky.

Please tell us if these ideas helped.

Good luck!

Hi Gerry,

I checked my Norton AntiVirus 2002 was upto date with the latest
definitions and run a "FULL" Scan. There were NO Viruses found.
I downloaded Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware ( Beta ) and ran a "DEEP"
Scan. There were NO Infections.
I have not downloaded HD Tune yet. How is the testing going?.
Do you still recommend me downloading ...
http://www.hdtune.com/

Do you still recommend me downloading Adaware from ...
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
.... and using it to remove parasites.

Thanks VERY much for your ongoing help. It is appreciated.

Hi Mart,

Thanks for your help.
As I said previously I am using Windows XP Home Edition with Service
Pack 1 ( SP2 on Order from Microsoft ).
If I need to go down that route at some future time I will use your
suggestions.

Hi confuzzled,

Thanks for your informative suggestions, I will keep them in mind.

Thanks to you all.
All the Best.
