Computers Started FREEZING, Please HELP

Hi everyone,

When I turn on my computer it has started to FREEZE.
This started happening last Thursday for some reason.
I have not downloaded anything.
I have NO viruses according to Norton ( latest definitions ).
There is nothing that shows in the event viewer log.
When it first started happening, it would get to the front screen with
the background ( mines Stonehenge ), and then I could NOT move the
mouse. I had to physically turn the computer off at the mains ( because
the OFF switch does NOT seem to do anything ) and then back on again,
which is NOT advisable I know. If I then move the mouse around as
everything is loading, there does NOT seem to be any problems for the
rest of the day.
It now seems to FREEZE in an earlier or different place each day.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
All the Best.

My guess is the Norton is probably causing this. Norton is a resource hog and
depending on how much power you have, you may just have to wait longer than
usual for the complete boot process. I won't use Norton for that reason. Have
you added any new hardward devices? As far as the power button, usually you
have to hold the button in for serveral seconds to reboot the pc when its in
that state. I would try uninstaing Norton and see it the problem still
occurs. I have seen this many times and again it depends on processor and
memory power. I use AVG by www.grisoft.com antivirus. It is free for the home
user and works very well and is not a resoruce hog.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply James O.
I have had Norton on my system for four years without any problems, so
far anyway.
I did as you suggested and waited a little longer, but no go.
I haven't added any hardware devices for months.
I ran a "error-check" on the "C" drive yesterday which came back ok. I
turned off the machine when I went out, and then when I came back and
turned it on again everything worked ok, NO freezing. Then this morning
when I turned on, I had it FREEZE again, puzzling.

Thanks Again.
All the Best.

Has anyone got any further suggestions please.

Thanks in advance.

This sounds so familiar. I had the same problem. Imagine a 3 hour virus scan
and towards the end, freeze up.

Anyway, we determined that the hard drive was heating up. The memory was
getting too hot. So, we added another fan to the unit.
This was four days ago and the computer has not frozen up.

Hope this helps.

I has a very similar problem that was resolved by replaceing a defective cpu
fan.
The fan would only run sometimes and the heat sink was clogged with dust
causing overheating.
No problems since new fan/heatsink installed. good luck.

There is a frightful virus out there and my 3 month old laptop is now
completely useless, it is causing my antivirus software program (Trend
Micro) to be automatically moved to the recycle folder and will not let me
click 'no' when a box comes up asking 'do you want to delete 'yes' or 'no''.
Yesterday when I could still do something with it, I ran scan after scan to
find out if I could quarantine it, but the scans continually came up '0 virus
detected'. I had to turn the computer off manually to prevent my files and
programs from being deleted as that question box won't let me go forward
without clicking on 'yes'. It is just horrible. The screen is acting all
crazy. If I clicked on a favorite to open it, the same box comes up asking
me if I want to delete it and will not take no for an answer. I have to shut
the machine off so that it will not delete . I tried restoring back a
week but that didn't help. I am now on my desktop and I just hope that it is
not infected too. I haven't used this one for at least a week. If my
antivius software can't identify and quarantine it, I'm afraid to do a
restore. Please help. (e-mail address removed) I will check any responses with
this desktop Thank you
