Ken, I've got to agree with you. I've used Norton products since DOS days,
but I finally got rid of System Works after Norton complained once too
often that it had encountered a problem and needed to be uninstalled, then
reinstalled. I now use a combination of AVG and Acronis products and have
not yet had a problem. Plus my computer boots up much more quickly now.

The only item I really miss is Norton's Unerase utility. Restoration just
doesn't quite cut it.

Diskeeper Corp (formerly Executive Software) has a good program, Undelete.
It's not free but it works well and has caused no problems here.

Hi Rock,
I am getting PM Free with two rebates $40 & $20. I also got NSW free with the purchase of NIS which will run out on my
OEM version in two days.

PS: Do you think the SFC helped fix my computer?

Thanks again, all you people have helped me a lot in the past and I do value your opinions.

Partition Magic is a good product, originally from PowerQuest which is the
version I have. It is not like NIS or the AV. PM is not memory resident.
It is invoked to do a specific job only. There is a lower cost alternative
from Terabyte Unlimited called BootIt Next Generation (BING). It has a 30
day free trial, full featured version. I have not used it but many of the
folks in here recommend it.

Bundled programs are as much an issue of marketing agreement between the OEM
and the partner. It does not mean it's the best for your system. For
anti-virus there is Avast (free version, which is what I use), AVG (free),
Computer Associates Etrust (low cost). For firewall there is Zone Alarm
which has a free version, and Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall (low cost,
which is what I use). For spyware, adware and other such there is Spybot
S&D, Adaware, HijackThis, Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender. The other
functions in Norton can be accomplished by tools within XP (or by free
downloads) and/or don't add much value. For example XP's defrag works just
fine. Registry cleaners are unnecessary and can be dangerous.

You may have spent money on some products but what is the cost to you for
the time and grief spent on trying to fix things when they cause problems?
One thing you will discover, if you carefully choose the apps, is the number
of headaches goes down significantly and system stability increases
immensely.

lol..free is good. I have on occasion seen SFC help a problem but usually
not. It's good for replenishing the dll cache if something is missing or
corrupt which is where Windows File Protection draws if the working files
get corrupted. If the problem exists down to the level of the dll cache
then SFC will help. . I can't say whether it solved your problem or not.
It can't hurt, though. Here is a link to some more, good info, on SFC.

Hi Rock,
Thanks again. You and all the MVP's have helped me on so many things.

I use to be a technical Beta tester for MS Win 95-Win ME also Office 2000 & XP
but when I got devoiced I lost my computer and just now got back into it and where it's been about b6 years I forgot
quite a bit.
I do miss getting Office and Windows Free.
I tried to get back in but they said it is going to be different now.

AVG is an anti-virus program from Grisoft. A free version for home users
is available at free.grisoft.com.
Acronis has a number of programs available for purchase. I use TrueImage
for backup and Disk Director Suite for partition creation and management.

Thanks Bill I will check it out but I need a complete Internet Security package. I am looking at CA Internet Security
but can't seem to get any answers on their options.
I have Partition Magic and am happy with that.
