XP MCE, HP computers & Norton Ghost

Hi,
Hope I didn't misunderstand this but I just learned from HP that you can't use Norton Ghost to copy a Win XP HD to a new
one and "MAYBE" can't use the recovery points to make a complete backup.
I tried to clarify this but they won't respond to it.

Does anyone know anything about this?
If I buy a new OEM version of Win XP MCE from Amazon.com can I backup that one up?

Have a good day,

Are you simply wishing to replace your hd with a larger one or what?
If that is the case, unless hp have locked their win to the specific hd, and
I dont believe that is the case, there is no reason why an Image/Copy app
should not work.
Recovery points are not a complete backup, for a complete backup use an
Imaging app

Hi "DL",
Are you simply wishing to replace your hd with a larger one or what?
If that is the case, unless hp have locked their win to the specific hd, and
I dont believe that is the case, there is no reason why an Image/Copy app
should not work.
I am replacing my HD it is defective has something called the MFT see below:
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the I also have:
4 KB in bad sectors.
I really don't understand this but HP said they would replace the HD.
Recovery points are not a complete backup, for a complete backup use an
Imaging app
I am using the option to do a independent complete backup with Norton Ghost 10 thought this WAS an imaging app..
This says it will create a backup even if windows doesn't start.I have a recovery disk to get there from the command
prompt to my external HD. It even has the drivers for my external HD.

If this is not the answer what else can I use?

Ghost is an Imaging App, or 'backup' type app if you prefer
It appears your hd has gone bad and HP is going to replace it, which is
good.

Now the problem is that if your hd has gone bad, and the win
installation/boot partition is corrupted then if you Image/Backup with Ghost
you are in effect copying the corruption. So if you restore the sys using
the Image/Backup your corruption will be restored also.
This isn't an exact interpretation, but I'm sure you'll understand.

You might be advised to install win and your apps and drivers from origonal
media supplied by HP & others
I don't use Ghost but you should be able to recover any data files from your
image, without problems

I do have a copy of XP before the problem started but my problem is now that HP Email Support still says it won't work
but won't tell me why.
from HP EMAIL Support:
I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. At this point, I would
like to inform you that you can take the back up of your hard disk on
the external drive, but that will not work to reinstall Operating system
in your internal hard drive. Yes, data will be there on the external
drive, but the recovery process will not be started. Hence, you need to
create recovery disc to reinstall the OS and all the application and
driver on the internal hard drive.

However, you can see the data on the external hard drive but you can not
recovery Computer using that external drive.

I called there phone support and they said "If Norton says it will work it will. We don't block anything.
I don't know who to believe but I thing You and Phone support are right.

Please advise if you have the time.

If you have a clean Ghost Image, together with the Ghost recovery cd you can
restore the sys disk.
This assumes the Ghost recovery cd you use to start the process has the
neccesary drivers to 'see' your external drive, and that I cannot answer.
For that you would have to check Ghost Manual or tech

Hi "DL",
I do have the drivers and it does work I just haven't tried to do the backup yet. I will when I get my new HD.
Still getting two different opinions from HP. I guess they don't want me to use this backup?

They are probably erring on the side of caution, any way you have nothing to
lose, as since if it doesnt work you can still recover/install using the HP
method

Hi DL,
That;'s exactly what I want to do. I am going to try this first when I get my new HD.
I do have 4 sets of their recovery disks mainly because they are very hard to read in my box. All my other DVD/CD
video, pictures and programs work fine but for some unknown reason I have a lot of trouble with their DVD.s.
