MBR Question

RScotti

I only have a recovery disk/partition and not the Win XP CD. Is there anyway I can make a copy of my MBR?
I made a new partition with Partition Magic for Vista and it caused me some errors and had to redo my whole drive.
I just bought Norton Ghost 10.0 but it only has a option to restore the MBR if there is a copy but no way to make a
copy.

I use MBRTOOL
http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/MBRtool_manual.htm

I use it with a bootable USB pen drive, you could put it on a Win98
boot disk http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Hi Pennywise,
Thanks, but how do I do that?

Do what? the floppy or USB
Floppy just create a Win98 boot disk, copy MBRTOOL to it, boot (you
will end up in a DOS window) and run MBRTOOL /? for instructions

Win98 SE OEM version, this one installs almost any CD.

Hi Pennywise,
I guess I can't do that. I only have a CD/DVD no Floppy drive.
I am having the same problems with Partition Magic can't get a rescue disk fir a CD.

Can you boot from a USB device?

Searching around you could boot up with a Linux CD and use DD to copy
the MBR, but then where would you store it (MBR) for later use.

USB floppies are around $20, I'm thinking of picking one up myself
(I've got 3000 AmigA floppies, I need to do something with <G>)

Hi Pennywise,
I do have a External HD but I don't know how to boot from it?
I use it mostly as a backup for all my data.
If there is a way I would appreciate your help.

XP won't allow you to use MBRTOOLS or DISKSAVE (nt resource kit), it
errors out. You need to boot into a DOS environment -

If your can boot from a USB device (Pen Drive)
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downloads/photos/retail/cruzermini_512MB_Allcolors.jpg
Shorter http://tinyurl.com/njk8p you can use
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306.html
to format and install Win98 to it - boot from it, run and save the MBR
to that.

If not you need a Floppy, Or... download Hiren's BootCD
http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3534349/Hiren_s_BootCD_v8.5_incl._keyboard_patch
Create a bootable CD with it, it has MBRTOOL's included, you will just
need to find a place to store the backup.

I think I will go this way. What backup do I have to store?
Does this have directions on how to ,use it?
I don't have much experience on this.

Hi Pennywise,
THANKS.
I D/L'd the Hiren's BootCD 8.5 and burned the ISO to my CD. I found the MBR TOOLS on it but I don't know how to use that
or the DISKSAVE. The read me just tells what is on the disk.

Can't I save the backup of the MBR to a CD since I don't have a floppy OR
maybe it would be better to store it on my 500 GB External HD?(Provided it will be seen at boot up?)

There are a lot of good things on this disk and would like to know more about them.
Is there a web site he has that will tell you how to use these utilities?

Hi Pennywise,
Sorry the readme file does give a brief description of the utilities.
I still not sure how to use this? Not familiar with the uha extension?

The whole purpose of this exercise is to back up your MBR, in the rare
event it becomes corrupt, or you want to take a step back after a
change.

So once you use whatever to back it up, the backup and program should
be kept together, preferably on a Rescue Disk, mine is a USB Pen Drive
(cause it boots and can be written to).

Each program on the CD is compressed and menu driven, UHA is the
compression format used, you would use the program uharcd.exe which is
on the CD to uncompress the files need'd.

Open a CMD window.
Drag and drop uharcd.exe into it, and add a - space - and - /? - to
the end. (path\uharcd.exe /?)
<enter> this will show the how to use the file.

Best to copy uharcd.exe and your compress'd file to the same directory
to work with it.

I just copied what I need'd off the cd, If you use the NTFS filesystem
run the NTFS program on the cd, you can drop to dos (CTRL-C) then read
or work with the HD.

It's a very good CD to have on hand, for more info on each program use
Google.

Hi Pennywise,
I just copied what I need'd off the cd, If you use the NTFS filesystem

I tried this but I don't have enough experience. I put both in my User directory than extracted it with:
C:\DOCUME~1\HP_ADM~1>uharcd e ntfs.uha

It did extract the program but I don't know if you have the time to show me how to do this. It is obvious I need a lot
of help if I am going to do this.
I tried to run the ntfsdos from the run command but got:
"16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe -ntfsdos
An application has attempted to directly access the Hard Drive, Which cannot be suopported.
This may cause the application to function incorrectly. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application"

I hit ignore and got this:
C:\DOCUME~1\HP_ADM~1>ntfsdos

NTFS File System Driver for DOS/Windows V3.02R (read-only)
Copyright (C) 1996-2001 Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell
Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

I also would like to know how you use:
you can drop to dos (CTRL-C) then read
I tried this at both the CMD level and windows and nothing happened.

If you have the time an patience.I am willing to keep at this but please understand I need a lot of help.

Thanks for your past help on this.
