Temporary Internet Files

RScotti

Hi,

1- When I go to my C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.
I only see about 500 files mostly Cookies, Gif's,JPEG,HTML,XML and other small files. When I hit the properties for the
folder it says: 1759 files 10 folders.
I can't see any folders and there is nowhere near 1759 files in that folder.
Where are they or is this a mistake?

The Temp folder says 2 folders 48 files which is correct.

2- When I tried to delete these with Disk Cleanup it wouldn't delete either this folder or the Temp folder files and I
had nothing running at the time. If I tried to delete them manually I had to keep going down one file cause it said it
was being used.

Maybe I should leave this alone?

Windows XP by default masks or hides certain files. This is done so the
user sees mostly personal data and not system components.
To see a higher % of content:
1.) Open Windows Explorer
2.) Click the Tools text option
3.) Click the Folder Options
4.) Toggle the TABs to View
5.) Under the "Hidden Files and Folders" category
a.) Check Show Hidden Files and Folders
b.) Uncheck Hide Extensions for Known File Types
c.) Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files

Thanks, but I already did all that before I viewed the folders.

The files and folders that you can't see within the TIF folder
are contained within a hidden folder named Content.IE5. This
folder will remain hidden to your user account even if you've
enabled "Show hidden files and folders" in Folder Options.

To view your Content.IE5 folder, do the following.

Go to Start -> Run and enter the following in the Open box.

%homepath%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

If you want to delete the contents of this folder, do the
following,

Go to Start -> Control Panel and double click Internet Options.
On the General Page, hit the Delete Files button.
In the box that pops up make sure you check the box next to
"Delete all offline content".
Click OK twice.

I'm no expert on the inner workings of Internet Explorer but
this article does as good a job as any I've seen in explaining
what this folder does.

What is Content.IE5?
http://www.wintipz.com/XP/AutoComplete.htm

If you've got any other questions on this subject, you might
want to post them to the IE newsgroup.

Good luck

Those web pages in your My Documents folder are safe. Any web
pages you saved through File -> Save as will not be deleted.
What will be deleted are web pages you elected to make
available offline through the Favorites menu. Take a look at
this article for more info on making web pages available
offline.

Your my documents folder will be left intact. If you want your pages that
are available offline, then just browse to the Temprory Internet folder and
in the address bar add \Content.IE5 and press Enter. You can delete the
manually.

For the problem:
If I tried to delete them manually I had to keep going down one file cause
it said it
was being used.

That problem is mailnly with Windows\Temp folder. You can delete the files
without any problems with Command prompt:
Start > Run > cmd
NOW HERE IS THE TYPING STUFF.Type:

cd C:\windows\Temp [This is temp folder name, if it's not
change it]
del *.* [This command will delete all the
files that can be delete.]

That's all. Browse to that folder and see by yourself.

Hi Nepatsfan,
I now know this is for IE 6 Browser question but since I started it here I had to ask.

I went to that site and started to read it and than went to look at the Organize Favorites and none of my sites have any
information in it as to the number of visits or last time there.

Is there anything I can do to get this to work?

Hi Ayush,
I am having the same problems with the command line. It sees a file that won't delete and doesn't delete any of the rest
of them.
I have nothing running except the 77 processes.Don't know what program is associated with Perflib_Perfdata_7a4.dat.
Did a search but it only showed up in the Temp folder.

C:\WINDOWS\Temp>del *.*
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\*.*, Are you sure (Y/N)? y
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_7a4.dat
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_9f8.dat
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Yes, it will say that for the files that cannot be deleted because they are being
used but all other files are deleted. It will take long tim to delete them manuall by
:

Choose files > It will delete some but say cant be deleted
Again choose some files > It will delete some but will say cant delete again and
stops

The main thing about cmd method is it will not stop even if a undeletable file is
found.

Hi Nepatsfan,
That option is NOT checked. In fact I went to one of the sites than checked and it still was zero.
There is something wrong I went to a different site than checked it said I was there 3 times instead of once. I than
closed the browser and went back now it says been there 8 times all the rest are still zero.

As I said in an earlier response, I'm far from an IE expert. I
have no idea why that feature is not working as you expect.

If you want an answer to your question you should really be
posting it in one of the IE newsgroups.

Good luck
