Hi,
My system will not shut down unless I hold in the power knob. All the icons disappear than nothing happens. This happens
on log off and shut down as well as System Restore.

What has changed since my last good time?
I probably did a stupid thing I wanted to see what was in System Volume Information so I used the instructions from the
MS Site to access it BUT I didn't change anything. Honest.
I also changed my Administrator's name, I was able to log off at that point but when it gave me the old names and new
name together.First I went back in and tried to change it back but than it had two names the same.
I went from RSCOTTI/HP_Administrator to RScotti/RSCOTTI/HP_Administrator to HP_Administrator/RSCOTTI/HP_Administrator
I tried to use System Restore to go back and correct this and That's when I noticed this problem.

I tried disconnecting my external HD but that was not the problem. As far as I know I didn't do anything else?
I have an HP Pavilion A1440N Desktop with OEM Windows XP MCE 2005.
2 GB Ram, 250 GB HD with a Recovery partition (D:)
If there is anything else you need let me know. I will be monitoring this NG for a reply.
Thanks.

You have some program that is not quitting. You will have to do some investigation. It will be
time consuming, but start with the suggestions in http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

You have some program that is not quitting.
Yes I do it was the Goggle Desktop It had several error messages at the same time of shut down.
I uninstalled it but didn't help.
This was the only thing in that web site that could be affecting this.
Also the names of the computer was in the System Volume Information Security tabs. In my user accounts it is just
RScotti. Didn't realize this to afterwards.

After I uninstalled Goggle Desktop I tried to shut down again and noticed this error message.this is not the exact
message but the best I can remember.
CCAPP.exe memory could not be written instruction 0x74736e49 memory at 0x6afdleb8.
Hope this will help.

CCAPP.EXE is part of Norton/Symantec Anti-virus program. You might have
to uninstall and reinstall the program.

I did the uninstall of NIS and rebooted twice but still had the system not shutting off. It must be something else

You might have to go to Norton's site and get the removal tool. Uninstalling Norton NIS is not an
easy set of software to remove and it does not always totally go away with the Ad/remove windows
tool.

I did remove it but that's not the problem Now I got a third error something like MNANE.EXE Not sure went by too fast to
write it down. It seems these are all problems but are not related to NIS
First there was the Goggle Desktop than the ccappe and then the mnane?

What makes you think Norton wasn't part of the problem? Ccapp is a a Norton
file and if the other file name is actually Nmain.exe, that's also a Norton
file (see below).

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/nmain/

You uninstalled NIS but did you go to their website and get the removal tool
and run that too. It is needed on top of uninstalling.

I guess where this happened after I uninstalled the NIS that's why I thought it was not Norton. Although I do also have
the NSW and where this is in the Symantec shared folder it could have been for NSW. Sorry for jumping the gun.

I went to the Symantec site to see about a removal tool but they only had it for virus and worms and Trojans and one for
spy ware ad ware etc.

Where I have a HP OEM the is a HP PC System Recovery but it does caution using it. Says to use System Restore and Driver
rollback first. Don't know much about it and HP Support hasn't answered my Email.

I also have a Microsoft Recovery something on my boot up option but don't know what that is either. I think it gives me
a choice to go to my HP Recovery, C/I386 and something else.
Any other suggestions?

I got some more information. I tried System Restore in safe mode and it did reboot but didn't go back to any restore
points.
Does anybody know how to use the MS System Recovery? It's on my boot menu.

Well I fixed it!
The problem was not the Norton products as what some of you thought.
I went to the program that lets you make the HP Recovery Tools CD and that had an option to reboot so I said yes and now
I can shut down normally. My MS System Restore also is working.
Thanks for all your help.

That doesn't mean the Symantec program(s) weren't causing or contributing to
the initial problem. Be careful here in your conclusions. You made all
kinds of changes to the system from when the initial problem surfaced to
this final resolution. Cause and effect is not clear, and I don't believe
you can draw the clear cut conclusion you have. I'm not saying that it
definitely was the Symantec program but the hanging CCapp.exe was certainly
a good clue since it's associated with it.

Hi Rock,
Yes but the other programs also got this message The Goggle Desktop. I also got a Microsoft C++ Visual error so maybe I
should NOT use MS Windows XP? I have a screen short if you want to see it.

My point was there were many changes from the time you first posted with the
symptoms and your final resolution. With all that change I don't think you
can draw a valid conclusion about what the initial cause might have been.

On the other hand we see many posts in here about problems created by
Symantec products including NIS and their AV. They are bloated and very
invasive. If they work well on your system then fine, use it. But I
believe there are better, less bloated, less invasive, and better working
alternatives.

Unless you recreate the original installation and troubleshoot
systematically then you're not going to find out at this point what was the
original conflict. There may have been more than one problem or an
interaction between several programs causing the issues.

I'm with you, but I'll go even further than that. I was one of those people
who used Norton products successfully for many years and poo-pooed the
advice of those who warned against it. I had it installed on all my own
machines and those of several others I supported. Then I started
experiencing a raft of problems of various types with it on several of those
machines.

Now I recommend against it for everybody. In my experience, even if you have
never had a problem with it, you're likely to have one soon. Not only are
there better, less bloated, less invasive, and better working alternatives,
most of them are also free.

Well I guess I can't ague with the experts but I like the products and just order the Partition Magic from them.
I have herd other people saying these things but since I don't use their Registry fixer which seems to be the most
dangerous in the suite I usually don't have many problems. I like their Speed Drive, UnErase,One Button Check and the AV
and I bought these before I knew about your opinions which I do listen to.
I just can't afford to through money away. The NIS came preinstalled on my computer from HP so I thought they should
know what is best for their systems.I do use Registry Mechanic BTW is by their parent company Digital River and it seems
to work without any problems.

As far as my problem I will definitely monitor it I can't see how a program that creates a CD could fix this although I
also did run SFC. Maybe that fixed it but there was only one file fixed which was:
C:\windows\Microsoft.net\framework\v1.0.3705\gacutil.exe.

Your opinion?

Ken, I've got to agree with you. I've used Norton products since DOS
days, but I finally got rid of System Works after Norton complained once
too often that it had encountered a problem and needed to be
uninstalled, then reinstalled. I now use a combination of AVG and
Acronis products and have not yet had a problem. Plus my computer boots
up much more quickly now.

The only item I really miss is Norton's Unerase utility. Restoration
just doesn't quite cut it.

OK what is AVG and what do you use for utilities? I do like the UnErase and SpeedDisk features in NSW.
I also herd the CA Internet Suite is also good.

Partition Magic is a good product, originally from PowerQuest which is the
version I have. It is not like NIS or the AV. PM is not memory resident.
It is invoked to do a specific job only. There is a lower cost alternative
from Terabyte Unlimited called BootIt Next Generation (BING). It has a 30
day free trial, full featured version. I have not used it but many of the
folks in here recommend it.

Bundled programs are as much an issue of marketing agreement between the OEM
and the partner. It does not mean it's the best for your system. For
anti-virus there is Avast (free version, which is what I use), AVG (free),
Computer Associates Etrust (low cost). For firewall there is Zone Alarm
which has a free version, and Sunbelt's Kerio Personal Firewall (low cost,
which is what I use). For spyware, adware and other such there is Spybot
S&D, Adaware, HijackThis, Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender. The other
functions in Norton can be accomplished by tools within XP (or by free
downloads) and/or don't add much value. For example XP's defrag works just
fine. Registry cleaners are unnecessary and can be dangerous.

You may have spent money on some products but what is the cost to you for
the time and grief spent on trying to fix things when they cause problems?
One thing you will discover, if you carefully choose the apps, is the number
of headaches goes down significantly and system stability increases
immensely.
