Please help: Start menu freezes!

Out of the blue, I tied to go to Start/Control Panel and the screen froze. I
couldn't activate anything at all. The only control I had was:
Control+Alt+Del, from where I could restart the computer. However, when I
tried to go to Control Panel again, the same phenomenon recurred.
After repeating it a couple more times, the dreaded all white desktop
appeared with the notation: "Desktop Recovery", only none of the suggestions
therein worked!
In addition, when I clicked on the Recovery bos, another message appeared
asking if I want to continue Error Checking: Yes/No. (all this is from
memory, I don't want the computer freezing again).
If I avoid going to "Start", all of the other programs work OK if I call
them from the desktop icons. Only the Start menu seems to be at fault.
If anyone has an idea how I should proceed, please, let me know. Thank you
all!

What antivirus and antispyware programs do you have?

Have you tried disabling the system sounds?
I use Windows 98 and Desktop Themes always slows it down.
