please help... I can't get xp to boot up excpt in safe mode

hope someone can help..
running xp pro

xp will not boot up
xp splashscreen sayes it is loading but it dies (stops) after the
spashscreen goes out.
please forgive me my computereze is very limited.
I did run Norton nothing was detected.
I was thinking there might be a bad driver but I don't know if that is
the case. So, before I cause serious damage I thought I would ask for
suggestions.
the only thing I can remember doing was down loading a calender
program called calendarscope if that helps.

Hello Pete,

While in safe mode click start, then run and type MSCONFIG and select
Selective start up,

THen uncheck
Processes System.ini file
Processes Win.ini file
Load System Services
and finally Load Startup Items

use original boot.ini will have a bullet in it, leave that alone for now.

Reboot teh system to a normal mode then one by one start adding items back
up, this is called a clean boot. some service or program is causing this to
happen
