alt.comp.freeware's Ware Glossary

Software: the instructions executed by a computer.

In theory software does not include the data processed by the
instructions. In practice a combination of instructions and data is
often called software.

Below is a brief glossary defining ware types shown on the Pricelessware
pages and/ or used in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup.

Several ware types may be used when describing a program (for example:
Donationware and Liteware and Betaware). Ware types are listed in
alphabetical order.

Abandonware: software that the original owner no longer offers to the
public. Abandonware refers to a product that is no longer marketed or
distributed by the author/company that published it. Orphanware is used
when the author cannot be located or the company is no longer in
existence. Copyright laws apply to Orphanware and Abandonware. The
programs are freeware only if they were released as freeware (or given
freeware status by the owner at a later date).

Adware: software that displays advertising for other products and/or
services (often downloaded from the internet by the software).

Betaware: a preliminary but useable version of what will be the final
version of a program. Beta versions are intended for testing by users
(alpha versions are test versions for the developers).

CDWare: promo CDs included with magazines, books or other products

Commercial Software: software that is sold.

Crippleware: free version of a commercial program. More limited in
features and functionality than the commercial product. Crippleware has
severe limitations. Functionality that is important to the average user
has been disabled.

Demo-ware: software that is intended to give potential purchasers an
idea of how the program works. Not a full version, type of limitation
varies.

Donationware: monetary contribution requested (optional)

Freeware: Legally obtainable software that you may use at no cost,
monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish.

Liteware: free version of a commercial program. A useful program that is
more limited in features and functionality than the commercial product.
Liteware is not time-limited.

Malware: software that contains malicious programming

Nagware: has a popup (nag) screen, asking you to purchase the software.
You must press a button to get past the nag screen.

Orphanware: see Abandonware

Registerware: you must provide personal information via registration in
order to download and/or use the program

Requestware: you are asked to do something. Examples: send a postcard or
email to the software author, perform a good deed, make a contribution
to charity

Shareware: commercial software that can be downloaded. Payment is
required for legal use of the software. Some authors use the honor
system, more commonly code is included to prevent the use of some or all
functions if payment is not made in accordance with the shareware agreement.

Spyware: software that sends information about you and your computer to
others (usually without your knowledge and consent). Spyware may also
install files on your hard drive without your knowledge.

Trialware: software which stops working after a period of time or number
of uses.

Warez: Software that is stolen, and/or enabled, by illegal means.

Suggested new ware type:

Registeredware: The program is keyed in some way. Re-registration is
needed either after a time interval or for reinstallation/ installation
on a new computer or when your email address changes etc. etc.

I feel the name "Registeredware" would end up being confused with
the name "Registerware" and vica versa.

What comes to mind is "Sisyphusware".

Should have added, that won't work either. Just what came to mind.

Revised suggestion:

Registerware: The program is keyed in some way. You must provide
_personal_ information via registration in order to download and/or
use the program.

You've confirmed my suspicions, "Registerware"/"Registeredware" is
too confusing.

I agree. Unfortunately, I don't have a suggestion for naming the
subcategory of registerware Susan is getting at.

Agree - I do think we need to flag apps that are keyed - IMO they are
*borderline* Freeware as they may not be usable for as long as you want.
Perhaps: "Registerware-ProductKey"

Suggested revision:

Registerware: you must provide personal information via registration in

Registerware-ProductKey: Registerware (as above) and the program is
keyed in some way. Re-registration is required either after a time
interval or for reinstallation, installation on a new computer or when
your email address changes etc. etc.

Progress is being made. ;) Registerware-Keyware perhaps?

ISTM we should have a thorough discussion before making any changes. I
hesitate to mention it ;) but the discussion should include whether or
not to add a description for logoware/brandedware.

Wares are listed in alphabetical order. ISTM these should stay together
- hence Registerware-KeyWare. That also makes it clear that it is
Registerware - *plus*. . . :(

Serif apps (keyed to your hard drive)

Prevx Home (I think they've removed this info from the FAQ - suspect it
still applies though. IIRC you can't run the app with an invalid email
address).

https://www.prevx.com/homeoffice/homesupport_FAQs.htm

</Q>
How can I change my email address that I registered with PREVX?

In order to change your registered email address you will need to
unregister your existing account and follow the steps indicated. Once
you have done this, please uninstall your copy of Prevx Home by clicking
‘Start’, ‘Programs’, ‘PREVX’, ‘Prevx Home’, ‘Uninstall’. When the
uninstall has completed and your PC has rebooted, go to
www.prevx.com/prevxhome and register again with your new email address.
Then follow the steps to download a new copy of Prevx Home.
<Q>

one of the anti-virus apps (can't think which one ATMM) requires annual
registration (expires without it). . .

those are few that come to mind. . .

I think this will lead to confusion with sites/authors who give you
a "product key" that's good forever after you register once, not
keyed to any particular hardware, timespan, or e-mail address.

Maybe get away from registerware preface to simply key-ware? It
isn't essential for the two definitions to sit side-by-side in the
glossary. People can scroll up and down to get different definitions.

*************
Keyware: "registerware" (defined elsewhere) that gives you a product
key that's good forever.

Dedicated Keyware: registerware that gives you a product key that's
dedicated to a timespan, installation, hardware, or email address.
The product key must be renewed for continued use.
**************

My definitions aren't that great. I only want to illustrate that
you don't need the definitions to sit side-by-side in a list. I
hope to generate more discussion.

I looked up some adjectives in a thesaurus. Here are some terms to
use with keyware possibly -- I'm not seeing anything pop for me but
this is a start ... choice-keyware, keyware-designated...
(dedicated, exclusive, selected, choice, elective, designated, assigned)

If you must give it a name, why not Activation-Ware: as per
MS's XP.

I would also suggest a distinction between Adware - which
may use you internet connection or interfere with other programs,
display pop-ups etc; And banner/sponsor ware - where the ads
are wholly integral to the program and have no adverse effects.

Could be called Registrationware. That would be, I feel, sufficiently
different so as not to confuse me.

Hi Linda,

Thank you for a helpful post - brainstorming is good. :)

Keyware does seem to be the most meaningful term so far. I don't think
we need ware names for all the possible ways an app may be keyed.
Keyware is keyed in some way - details vary from app to app. (Liteware,
Crippleware, Trialware etc. definitions are similarly broad.)

AFAIK sll these apps are Registerware and are usually described as such.
ISYM Registerware-Keyed or Registerware-ProductKey may be easier to
remember and use than Keyware.

As Q pointed out - some keyed apps don't require re-registration. That
means the definition of Registerware-Keyed should read something like
this:

Registerware-keyed: Registerware (as above) and the program is keyed in
some way. Re-registration *may* be required either after a time interval
or for reinstallation, installation on a new computer or when your email
address changes etc. etc.

note re: acceptable/unacceptable for the PL. Registerware apps may be
nominated for the PL - ISTM Registerware-keyed apps should also be
allowed as a ware type.
