I think we are not in a hurry, yet. So I put it up to the group that both
'definitions' of adware proposed are in fact linguistic tautologies. ;-)
(They 'define' a word with a variety of itself...)

To be not only destructive I post another suggestion, which I derived from
a proposal I set last year:

Adware: Software that displays or outputs promotional information for
any other version, product or service outside its help system.

Let's see if someone else likes it. (Or follows up with yet another one.)

Without agreeing or disagreeing of your tautological comment, I do like
your definition for it's explicitness. It is a more encompassing
definition.

Thanks. ;-)

Just to clarify my classification of the definition: The term Adware
does not stem from 'software carrying additional things', but from
'advertising supported software' (like Wikipedia put it short and
precise, IMHO).

Surprisingly, Adware is a rather old term. A quick Google search
revealed one of the earliest Usenet posts on that theme:

| FastEddie 3.1 has been released by Cottage Software as "AdWare" (as they like
| to call it) without the restrictions of earlier demo-versions which were
| limited to handle small files only. They call it AdWare because a window comes
| up every so often which advertises Cottage Software.

I think we are not in a hurry, yet. So I put it up to the group that both
'definitions' of adware proposed are in fact linguistic tautologies. ;-)
(They 'define' a word with a variety of itself...)

Actually, the definitions are very different.
To be not only destructive I post another suggestion, which I derived from
a proposal I set last year:

Adware: Software that displays or outputs promotional information for
any other version, product or service outside its help system.

Doesn't cover
" Adware: Software that displays advertising."

I prefer

Adware: Software that displays or outputs promotional information
for any other version, product or service, or outputs *any*
promotional information which in the normal course of use of the
program, would be sent to others.

I don't have a problem with your adding your caveat about the
program's help system.

I see what you mean. Because of last years discussion I intentionally
left *pure* self-promotion. (It would have been 'for itself, any other
version, product or service'). Following a broader definition, last year
some programs nearly got fired from PWL for innocently mentioning a bit
more information than their name. (Like a web address for contacts.)
I certainly don't like *that*.

Maybe a second sentence on my definition could deal with such cases:

'Self-promotion *may* classify a program as Adware, especially if done
obtrusive.'

That way we (hopefully) can prevent the over-reactions which might
occur following your proposal. ;-) Every single case would need
investigation and can result in endless disagreements, though...

Hi BeAr,

This is a *voting* thread. Alternate Adware definitions can be discussed
in the [PL] Ware Glossary - Annual Review thread.

We need to know the *type* of Adware definition we are striving for -
there is a great divide - is it only "paid" advertising or does it
include "self" advertising? To date discussion hasn't given us the
answer - there has not been enough participation.

I hope many people will participate in this poll. As you said - we're
not in a hurry. The exact wording of the Adware definition can be
discussed and agreed upon when the *direction* is clear.

in the [PL] Ware Glossary - Annual Review thread.

Don't call it 'and opinion' than. ;-) The Annual Review thread is
not within a part of my newsreader, anymore, where I would recognize
it. Btw.: Why did you start a *ballot* at this time at all??
I hope many people will participate in this poll. As you said - we're
not in a hurry. The exact wording of the Adware definition can be
discussed and agreed upon when the *direction* is clear.

Huh? You just initiated a ballot: to get different opinions -> to start a
discussion -> to have enough opinions to select some to vote on -> to
start the next ballot -> to... Or did I miss something?!! ;-)

Laughing,
BeAr

Are dog and pony shows suppose to be funny?

Ad-supported client - A definition

An Ad-supported client is any software application in which
advertisements are displayed while the program is running. The authors
of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads,
which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears
on a computer screen. The justification for ad-supported client is that
it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the
cost for the user.

Adware - A definition

Adware is any software application which displays advertisements while
the program is running.

Foistware - A definition

Foistware is software which is installed with completely unrelated
programs. That means that there is no particular property in the
software that makes it Foistware, but rather the context in which it was
installed.

Example of foistware:
An Internet Explorer search toolbar bundled with a MP3 player.
An anti-virus program bundled with a word processor.

Developers of free sofware with large distribution sometimes get paid to
bundle unrelated software with their software. The Foistware in most
cases mentioned in the End User License Agreement. Example of software
that include unrelated software is Kazaa, iMesh, BikiniDesk, etc.

Spyware - A definition

"Spyware is ANY SOFTWARE which employs a user's Internet connection in
the background (the so-called "backchannel") without their knowledge or
explicit permission. Silent background use of an Internet "backchannel"
connection MUST BE PRECEDED by a complete and truthful disclosure of
proposed backchannel usage, followed by the receipt of explicit,
informed, consent for such use. ANY SOFTWARE communicating across the
Internet absent these elements is guilty of information theft and is
properly and rightfully termed: Spyware."

Thanks. ;-)

YW

Just to clarify my classification of the definition: The term
Adware does not stem from 'software carrying additional things',
but from 'advertising supported software' (like Wikipedia put it
short and precise, IMHO).

There is noting wrong with a short, precise definition at all. But too
many times, people try to make things too short and lose the precision
of the language. People assume that you know what you are stating in a
sentence without realizing that what they state must interpreted based
on a commonality of experience. Unfortunately, such commonalities are
almost as rare as that oh so elusive thing called common sense.
Surprisingly, Adware is a rather old term. A quick Google search
revealed one of the earliest Usenet posts on that theme:

IIRC, I first heard it used in 1995.

Message-ID: <[email protected]>

It is from 1987!

Wow! Ancient by Internet standards indeed.

True, but these ware definitions for apps are IMO just labels,
shorthand so entire phrases don't have to be typed out again and again
when referring to them. As such, I don't see a problem with the word
"advertising" being at the core of the definition for adware.

?

=?ISO-8859-1?Q?=BBQ=AB?=

I'm assuming that "displays" includes the output.

I don't know, and I'm the one who proposed that definition. I also
proposed this one, an attempt to excluded programs that tag their
output with ads:

Adware: Software which displays advertising while it is running.

AFAICT, that one is not included in this poll because it would create
some problem WRT current pricelessware.
