[PL] Slogan Vote Results

G

Garrett

The following are the results of a thread requesting votes on changing
the Pricelessware slogan.

Originally, two slogans were set to be voted on, but a third was cast
in by people wishing to vote on it. I personally have no problem with
this, but I can't say whether this will be acceptable with others.

In this group, not everyone will ever agree 100% on anything.

<Snip results>

I think a few of us (i.e., at least me) who were not counted were aligned
with maintaining a Windows reference. For future reference, a count of this
type should include spoiled/other/etc. as one or more categories.

"Windows" is a REGISTERED TRADEMARK when used as in the slogan. This is a
simple correction that should follow from a brief discussion. A vote is not
only not required, it is inappropriate. It is a fact in the U.S. and many
other countries. We got it wrong and just didn't notice before. Go to the
Microsoft site and look. While some feel that this is an inappropriate
trademark, until someone wins in court or the USPTO grows a spine, we are
stuck with it.

While I and others will quibble with the exact count and even object to the
vote altogether as premature, I think it is clear that approximately 60% of
those expressing an opinion prefer a pared down slogan. Adding,
subtracting, or moving 5 or so votes won't change the final results. Can we
please just move on to _substantive__discussions__of__freeware_ without 10
more additions and corrections?

And actually, I would like to change my vote to the third option. This
group was never intended (from what I've read by Googling) to be a
Windows only newsgroup. Also, this would remove the "Windows is a
Registered Trademark" concern from the slogan.

Wow ..... less than 50 votes. And around 200-300 posts per day in this
group. Shows how much interest there really is in all the POLITICS that
goes on here. I hope this is a truely democratic site and that the
MAJORITY aren't ruled by a MINORITY.

Voting in an unmoderated group seems a bit strange to me, like voting in a
anarchy. But on the other hand there doesn't seem a better way to solve
issues for the side-dishes that come with the meal, at least for the people
that are interested. I guess for a lot of people the appetite has gone after
the battle of the menus.

Voting in an unmoderated group seems a bit strange to me, like voting
in a anarchy.

The voting is about the Pricelessware list, not about this newsgroup.

People can participate in this newsgroup and ignore everything connected to the pricelessware list.
Some of the participators in acf are involved in the creation of the PL list, others are just participating in the newsgroup.

One single faq for this newsgroup is not good, because it can be used by people who want to control the newsgroup.
Several different faqs are better, no faq at all is probably the best.

This group was never intended (from what I've read by Googling) to
be a Windows only newsgroup.

That's true, but the PL was intended to be for Windows freeware.
Also, this would remove the "Windows is a Registered Trademark"
concern from the slogan.

That was not a problem; if it had remained in the slogan, it just
needed to be marked with the 'registered trademark' symbol rather than
the 'copyrighted' one.

Good points.

I still wish that there were separate freeware groups designated by
OS. For instance, alt.comp.freeware.windows.

You could run it through alt.config -- it's never too late. ;)

But I don't think people would stop using alt.comp.freeware for
OS-specific freeware, so Windows users would wind up with at least
two groups to monitor. Also, with the rise of open source software,
there have come a lot of cross-platform freeware apps, and I think
if there were multiple groups, they would become a maze of
crossposting.

Is that not you there? If so, then it's still 26. doesn't make much
of a difference anyway. I think it's pretty obvious. ;-)

I agree. Your count was 14-3-26 (43 total). My informal count is 18-4-29
(51 total).

In accordance with the results of the vote the Pricelessware List at
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org will display this slogan:

The best of the best in Freeware as determined by the readers of
alt.comp.freeware.

-----------

FWIW this is my informal summary of the voting:

Votes were cast in 3 threads:

PL: Change the PL Slogan or Not - Vote Here
Change the PL Slogan or Not - Vote Here
Simplifying Pricelessware Slogan Vote

---------

Votes were cast for 3 choices (ignoring copyright symbols and other
minor variations):

A. (18) "The best of the best in Windows Freeware as
determined by the readers of alt.comp.freeware."

B. (4) "The best of the best in Freeware for Windows
(and other OS) as determined by the readers of alt.comp.freeware."

C. (29) "The best of the best in Freeware as determined by the readers
of alt.comp.freeware."

Well, actually it is probably too late for the very reasons you list
below. Had the arrangement been mulitiple OS specific groups from the
beginning, then a different method of posting would have evolved.
But I don't think people would stop using alt.comp.freeware for
OS-specific freeware, so Windows users would wind up with at least
two groups to monitor.

Heh. Harley riders have three groups to monitor
(alt.motorcycles.harley, rec.motorcycle.harley and
alt.binaries.pictures.motorcycles.harley) and nobody complains. That's
simply the way it's been for a long time, so they've gotten past it.
Also, with the rise of open source software,
there have come a lot of cross-platform freeware apps, and I think
if there were multiple groups, they would become a maze of
crossposting.

Perhaps then, "alt.comp.freeware.opensource". But at any rate, things
are the way they are now and it's probably too late to change them.

They did consider multiple groups originally. Here's a shortlink to
the alt.config discussion back in '95:

http://makeashorterlink.com/?P24151039

I notice that Timo Salmi was involved with ACF from the start.

Wow ..... less than 50 votes. And around 200-300 posts per day in this
group. Shows how much interest there really is in all the POLITICS that
goes on here. I hope this is a truely democratic site and that the
MAJORITY aren't ruled by a MINORITY.

Actually I did vote for option 1, but my vote seems to be missing. Or
perhaps they recalled the vote and did another one on another thread which
i seem to recall seeing they were considering to do. Oh well, never was
interested in that much politics lol.
