Suggest name revision: Bart's PE Builder

This was listed simply as "PE Builder."

Been there, checked that out last year. The name *is* PE Builder. Take a
look at the screen shot on the home page. You could ask the *author* to
change it. ;)

Sounds like you may have accidentally added her to your Killfile. Try
temporarily disabling the message filter rules you've set up and seeing if
you can then get Susan's postings. You should then be able to reenable and
apply them to ACF one at a time until her posts dissappear to discover which
one's the offending item.

Hmmm, I emailed Bart and asked him to review the program name,
description and the category the program is listed in.

System Utilities\Boot Disk Creator

I also asked for permission to include the program in the 2006 CD
while I was at it... more after I get a reply.

Checked that the very first time I noticed it and it was not the cause,
thanks anyway :o)

Keeping it FREE!

These are already listed. Did you change something in the descriptions?

I _thought_ that I changed versions from 1.06 to 1.07. I'm not sure
where I got the old info from, but yes, the current descriptions are
up to date, my bad.

I propose allowing simple program names and versions to be submitted
for the remainder of the nomination process.

I disagree.

I'll chip in on
re-validating the information or looking up any new info. Hopefully a
few of us can split the list up and work through it quickly.

I will list apps after you or others verify the descriptions.

Things do change. You aren't/weren't happy about PGP Freeware being on
PL2005 - A few days ago I spent quite a bit of time looking at the info
about the current "free" version - it's infinitely worse than the
version you objected to so strenuously.

ISTM it's all too easy to grandfather apps in based on an earlier
version. IMO this is the best time to weed out programs that have become
bad apples.

No problem. I'll try to devote more time this week in validating
program descriptions. I'm not going to do so for programs that I am
not going to nominate, but if someone else wants to nominate it and
does not have the time to validate I'll lend a hand.

PL2005 - A few days ago I spent quite a bit of time looking at the info
about the current "free" version - it's infinitely worse than the
version you objected to so strenuously.

That's why I requested versions that others might want to nominate.
I'm hoping that nothing is requested to be grandfathered similar to
the following:

Are you talking about this thread?

http://groups.google.com/group/alt....b?q=2005+PL+PGP&rnum=1&hl=en#ff8a2f237313cbfb

Yes, I'm not sure how the newer (crippled, liteware) version was voted
as Priceless. I myself might have inadvertantly voted for it. I hope
not.

The problem here is that the international (non-zimmermann) version
was pretty solid. We had the (somewhat evil) NAI corp. owning it and
crippling it, we had Zimmermann re-acquire the program and hopes of
the program returning to it's original uncrippled freeware status, and
we had older international versions released by others.

At the time of the thread, I considered the program crippled badly.

The good versions are still available.

From zimmermann's page:

"No differences in cryptographic strength
There is no significant difference between any version of PGP you get
inside the US and the corresponding version you get from outside the
US, as far as cryptographic strength is concerned. There is no
difference in key sizes, quality of the cryptographic algorithms, or
any other differences in cryptographic security characteristics.
Regardless of whether you got it from the MIT site, Network
Associates, PGP Corporation, or the www.pgpi.org site, all versions of
PGP that I have been associated with are secure, and no versions have
ever been weakened for export or for any other reason, in the history
of PGP since the first release in 1991. This is true at least up
through PGP version 9.0. If my own assurances are not convincing
enough, you can always download the PGP source code and check it
yourself."

It looks like the older versions are plenty strong.

Unfortunately, PGP is not returning to its freeware roots.
ISTM it's all too easy to grandfather apps in based on an earlier
version. IMO this is the best time to weed out programs that have become
bad apples.

Very true. This is the time to clean house. It's also the time to get
the info updated for the programs that are to be nominated though. I
seem to be having spasms of free time. I'll happily try to see that
all quality programs are re-validated asap.

Some earlier versions have been removed - the links redirect to the
latest "free" version => PGP Desktop 9.0 Trial Software.

Not good. Most of the links on this page seem to be good. I got a
couple of 404s. Temp or permanent I don't know...

http://www.pgpi.org/cgi/download.cgi?filename=PGPfreeware602i.exe

This is for PGP v6.0.2i, which is the last real freeware version that
contains PGPdisk iirc.

I can see from Zimmermann's page that he recommends the MIT page, but
it has been discontinued due to the age of the program and problems
with newer operating systems.

This means that it will probably be best to go with another program,
such as TrueCrypt this year.

I, btw, bought the commercial version of PGP. I'm a bit worried that
my PGP driver might conflict with other products, so, if anyone else
has any experience with freeware encryption programs this would be a
really great time to discuss them.

Man, I wonder if your feed has pegged her as a spammer???

Both TeraNews and the place my ISP outsources news feeds to do a
pretty good job in removal of spam. I wonder if yours is possibly too
aggessive?

It's certainly possible, though I've spoken to them about it before and
they've no idea whats going on either.

When Individual stopped being free, I had to revert to my ISP's feeds as I
either couldn't afford the others, or couldn't get them to work.

EditPad Lite
Home Page: download v 5.4.5 (2005-09-28) [ SetupEditPadLite.exe (973
KB)]
http://www.editpadlite.com/editpadlite.html
(desc. rev.: 2005-09-28)

Revision date changed to that of the last release date:

EditPad Lite 5.4.5 - Released 28 September 2005

The release date is shown right after the version info: v 5.4.5
(2005-09-28). The "desc. rev." date refers to changes on the PL web
page. (FWIW - I'm showing a new date for descriptions that have been
verified even though the web page may not have changed.)
The Linux version is available separately.

I added a note that the file name shown is for Windows.

I need your help. Let's work together to make this the *best*

is there please take a few minutes - check the description, update it as
needed and post it in this thread.

hmmmm. . . no new descriptions posted. . . nothing. . . nada. . .

************* Plan B *****************

I suspect the group will want to *nominate* a whole lot of programs that
aren't on the current list of elegible programs. Making that happen is
going to require some drastic changes in the format of the Pricelessware
List. The only viable option I see ATM:

Program submittals will require this information:

Category/Subcategory
Program name
Company name and/or Author's name
Ware description
ONE URL (maximum)

The 2006 Pricelessware List will look like the ACF pages - there will be
no detailed descriptions. Note also: there will be no PL2006 CD (not
enough information).

Comments please.
