Pivot table crashing after the install of KB973475

A

Arc-is-t

working in Windows XP Pro - Office 2003 - Excel
when updated the worksheets with new information (adding the last months
info to the existing worksheet) and consoidating the information to update
the pivot tables, excel crashes. I remove the latest update for excel
(KB973475) and go through the same steps - it works as it always has. Short
of just not installing this update, do you have any suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

MS have been advised of problems with both KB973593 for Excel 2007 and
KB973475 for Excel 2003. Typically the problem is with "ghost images" while
using VBA (normally the workaround is to reset screenupdating), though this
is now the second report I've read concerning Pivot tables and crash.

If you have a support contract with MS it'd help if you open an incident and
fully describe the problem, you should not end up being charged, (things
move faster if it is perceived many users are impacted). Otherwise feel free
to email the minimum necessary to recreate the crash (with full instructions
and if necessary an additional file of sample data) and I will forward. My
address is lightly disguised in the reply-to field.

Further my last message could you clarify if the crash occurs in one (or
both) of the following scenarios

1. Excel 2003 crashes when changing the data source for a PivotTable if
Freeze Panes is enabled on the same sheet
2. Excel 2003 crashes when opening file where PivotTable is set to refresh
on open

For 1 MS suggest workaround to turn freeze panes off
For 2. MS suggest try opening in 2007. This is probably not helpful !
Instead might I suggest defer the refresh after opening with an OnTime macro

I'd be interested to know if 1 or 2 are related to your situation and if so
does the appropriate workaround help.

Peter T
