How to stop pivot table crashing in Excel 2007

In a large spreadsheet with several tabs I’m having a problem with excel
crashing while making a pivot table after a specific series of events happen.
On the main data tab I have both several columns populated by data from an
Access query and several columns populated by assorted formulas (date 1st of
month & vlookup).
If I do this excel crashes:
1) Start a pivot table & chart from main data tab by clicking the icon from
the toolbar
2) Put the chart on a separate tab from the pivot table
3) Try to drag & drop any field that is populated by a formula
I can drag around other fields, but as soon as I move a field that is
populated by a formula such as 1st of the month date formula excel crashes.
If I leave the chart on the same tab as the pivot table there is no crashing
but then the chart resizes every time I adjust the contents of the pivot
chart because the chart size is affected by the column widths changes which
change with every pivot table adjustment.
Is there a way I can either:
1) Fix the size of a pivot chart when on the same tab as the pivot table
2) Do something to stop the crashes when the chart is on a different tab
than the table.
After several crashes a box popped up asking to do a scan to see if it could
find a problem with Office 2007 and one problem was found with an install
package and fixed but nothing changed as far as the crashes. Sometimes after
the crashes the recovered files are having an invalid format error.
