Pitch black

I don't know what happened to my computer. All of sudden
it shows only a mouse pointer on a black screen, nothing
else comes up after. I can move the mouse pointer on the
screen.I can only reset the computer to restart, everytime
it starts it shows me the options to choose between safe
mode, start normally and so on. After that I can see
windowXP logo screen then it goes to the black screen
nothing but the mouse pointer.
Here's what I did so far: run recovery consel (chkdsk /r
and fixboot), tried to open windows in safe mode and the
last known good config...
What's wrong?

Check your video card by swapping it with one you know
works.

yes I did, but without the mouse pointer on screen.
I replaced the video card. But both of these cards are old
Cirrus Logic.

You could try booting with your XP CD and running a chkdsk
/r from the recovery console.

you are right, I just reinstalled the OS from scratch
(delete partition, format and install)
Still after windows XP Pro logo screen it goes to the
black screen wiht the mouse pointer. What the heck is this?

Vin Diesel.

Did the swap fix the problem?
