Pioneer DVR-111 DVDRW - drive won't boot

I've just replaced a dead DVDRW drive with a Pioneer DVR-111.
I'm no longer able to boot from CD (worked perfectly okay with the old
Lite-On drive).
It appears the DVR-111 is not recognised by the OS (XP SP2) as a bootable
device.

I've been on to Pioneer customer service and they have no idea. The correct
80-wire
Ultra ATA cable is in use, the jumper is set to Master okay, the drive is
the only device
on the secondary IDE channel, and is able to read and write disks quite
normally - I
just can't boot from it.

I've even updated the FW to the current spec as per Pioneer's web site.

Anyone give me some help with this?

What about changing the boot order in yer BIOS?

That's what doesn't work The computer just passes on to the next device
in the boot sequence, as if it doesn't see the drive as a bootable device.
And yet the DVD drive works fine for reading and writing once the OS is
up and running.

The OS has nothing to do with booting - that is purely a function
of the bios.

My guess is that if your BIOS isn't going to recognize it as a bootable
drive, then you're SOL. I notice that the drive will operate in a ton of
different transfer modes, so this seems frustrating to say the least.

I'd guess that this is an issue with your MB slash BIOS. What MB is it? Is
it significantly older than the drive?

If you have room in your case you can tuck the Lite-On drive back in as a
slave just so you have a bootable optical drive.

Yes, it seems likely to be a MB issue. It's an HP Vectra 800, so it's one of

their own branded boards, God knows who actually made it. It's a few years
old, but the thing is, it's a damned good computer! It's never given me
this
sort of trouble before, despite a good many hardware changes of one sort
or another.

This is an odd one. But you're right. I'm out of luck this time

Anyone want to buy a Pioneer DVR-111 DVDRW drive?
