Photoimpact Problem

I am running Windows XP Home Edition SR-2.
I have had the same problem with both Ulead Photoimpact 7 and Nova
Photoimpact Pro 8.5. When I click on the icon to run the program, I get the
splash screen and then it fails to load the rest of the program with no error
messages.
I have talked to both tech supports and Ulead's only suggestion was to
delete the program and reinstall it making sure I have Administrator
privilages, which I do, and this didn't do any good. Nova's tech support
seems to feel that it is an operating system problem.

These are the only programs that I have had this problem with. I really
don't feel like formating the hard drive and reinstalling everything to fix a
possible system problem but I very much like Photoimpact, which I used the
older versions before I upgraded to Windows XP.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I think it's a compatibility issue. Have they ever worked correctly in
Windows XP? I like PhotoRazor(?) from
ULead but it crashes too in Windows 2000. Compatibility. But I think I
know why it happens. When the
program fires up it wants to open the last used folder. If that folder has
stuff in it it can read, it goes bonkers. So
what I do before I exit, I make sure I choose a folder that has nothing in
it then I close the program. Try that if
you ever get it going. Make sure the folder it wants to open up with is
empty.

I had version 5 when I installed XP. It was definately incompatible and I got
a message about it from XP. I upgraded to the new versions which are supposed
to be compatible. All the other programs in the package (Album, Photo
Explorer, GIF Animator) work fine. Just the main program fails to load. I
have scrubbed every reference to the previous programs and the new programs
from the registry and the hard drive and reinstalled it several times to no
avail. Your idea sounds good if I could just get to start once. Also, any
updates or patches can only be downloaded when you are in the program.
