Registry problems -- stops some programs for some users

I'll try to be brief but this is tough... for me at least.

Over the last couple of years I've experience problems with several programs
(Norton anti-virus, ULEAD PhotoImpact, My DVD and others) that will cause the
programs to "terminate unexpectantly".

I first noticed this with Norton and, after nearly losing my system,
discovered that it ran fine for other users on the system. It just wouldn't
run for me. Being desparate at the time, my fix for it was to create a new
account for me, copied all my files from my old account over to my new
account, everything worked and I went on my merry way for some time.

I then encountered the problem with Ulead. Out of desparation I tried a
complete de-install of ULead PhotoImpact, then re-installed it and it luckily
worked again. As time passed I have had the same problem with ULead
PhotoImpact several times and, luckily, a complete de-install/reinstall fixes
the problem. (To this day I encounter this problem and am unable to
determine why or when it will happen)

I next encountered the same problem with MyDVD. De-installing and
re-installing the program will NOT fix this problem. The only way I can now
run MyDVD is to log in as a different user and open my files as that
different user.

It seems obvious that this is a MicroSoft/Vendor registry problem but trying
to get any help from MicroSoft as to how to possibly reset and clear my
vendor specific registry entries seems to be impossible and getting any help
from ULEAD has proven to be just as impossible. (Ulead tells me to
de-install and re-install their software... how helpful)

Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this problem? I'd sure like to at
least get MyDVD to run for me as ME instead of me as someone else. :)

Thanks,

Lee

Look in Event Viewer for errors and possible leads. What makes you
think that these are registry problems, do you get errors messages
stating so?

John John,

No, I get no error messages other than "unexpected termination" however I'd
point out that the error message I do get appears to be a Windows message as
it is the same regardless of which program has the problem.

I believe they are registry problems because I can't think of anything else
it would be. There isn't anything wrong with my files as evidenced by the
fact that they work fine after uninstalling/deinstalling the program (in the
case of ULEAD) or running them as another user (as in the case of MyDVD). I
have to believe that the programs themselves are good because they work fine
except for the unexpected terminations and they work fine for "somebody
else".

One other thing, this problem is not unique to my system. I have a friend
who experienced the same thing with a completely different program on another
system.

You are right... it might not be the registry, but as I said, I can't think
of anything else it would be.

What is the "Event Viewer". Sounds like I should learn about that.

Thanks for the reply John John.

Hello Dogbeagle
Go to Start/Progs/Admin Tools and Event Viewer is one of the entries. Click
on that and you get Event Viewer.
There are three categories named Application, Security and System.
Click on each, one at a time and you will get a list of occurrences timed
and dated each time your computer starts and closes.
Very useful for detecting warnings and errors.
Double click on an event in either of the three categories and you get some
info(most of which means nothing to me).
Included in this info is a reporting link to MS Help & Support, that
'sometimes' gives you an explanation etc.
I tend to look in the Event Viewer each time I switch on, just to make sure
all appears to be running.

Look/search in the Windows help files for Event Viewer. Or run this in
the Start>Run box: %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

For more in depth information see or search Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427

Using Event Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...roddocs/en-us/snap_event_viewer.mspx?mfr=true

To view more information about an event double-click the event. If you
need to copy the event here so that someone can help you with the error
click on the clipboard icon on the left then paste the contents in your
message. We would only need to know f the events that are directly
related to your problem, we don't need to know of all the events in the log.
