Photo Editing Software

OK, time to provide your opinion on photo editing software. I have a very
nice digital camera (Nikon) with an Epson 960 Printer. I am about to
purchase photo editing software but am overwhelmed by the wide selection of
choices. What is the best software (I want to spend less than $100)
available for this. I also am looking for photo software that will archive
a photo on a CD, story some data about the photo on a database that resides
on the computer, and then will prompt me to insert CD XYZ. So, for example,
I want to pull up a picture of my daughter at a party she was at in 5/2002,
the software should tell me to insert CD 123 into the drive so it can
retrieve the picture.

I would suggest that you have a look at
Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 4:

You can download a 30 day evaluation version here:
http://www.jasc.com/products/photoalbum/

Though I'm not at liberty to discuss details
at this time, a new version of Microsoft Picture It!
will be released in a few days. Look for
Digital Image Suite 9.0.

Amazon says they will have it on July 14th, and it
should be widely available in retail stores by the
end of July.

If you want organization plus simple editing try these free trial downloads:
http://www.lifescapeinc.com/picasa/, beautiful thumbs, good cropping to
aspect ratio (but doesn't show image size)
http://www.ulead.com/pex/runme.htm cropping shows size
http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/download.html

For heavy duty editing:
http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/main.html
http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/

If you want both you will need two programs. Before buying I would wait for
the details of that new Picture It! though.
