Phone Works-Fax Don't

My fax will not work. I print to fax, type in the send to info and hit the
ok's. It loads and brings up the fax monitor. It tries to send. I look at the
Fax Monitor and in the Extended Status, it tells me it doesn't have a line, I
assume this means dial tone. I have plugged a phone into the jack the modem
plugs in to, using the same RJ 11 cable and made a call. I have plugged the
jack into the phone port on the moden and made a call. It should have a
connection. I've run the test on the modem and it says everything is ok. I've
looked the the Fax Monitor Status and it says the fax is on line. Am I
missing something? I'm using a Dell Dimension 8250 with a factory Conexant
HSF V92 56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI Modem. I've never had to use the fax in two
years. Everything by e-mail but today............I've spent 3 hours donking
with this thing and it should not be that difficult. I do not hear a tone
when the progress monitor pops up and does its thing. Suggestions accepted
graciously.

A fax or data modem will only use Line One of a multi-line jack. It
simply passes Line Two through without connecting it to the computer
internally. A single line voice telephone connects both lines
internally so either line will work. You will need an adapter which
breaks out both Line One and Line Two as two Line Ones. They will
use the center pair of wires. Do not get just a simple splitter.
That will not solve the problem. Go to Radio Shack or a similar
store and ask for an adapter to convert Line Two to Line One.
