Pesky "Ne active mixer devices available" - Still no fix

Hi - I have been researching this for months and trying just about everything
which has been suggested, from points all over the web - but with no fix. My
version of the problem seems a bit different from others. A re-boot will
always fix the problem and it will be fine for a few weeks but always
re-appears.

My issue just happens quietly, out of nowhere with no warning or error
messages. All of a sudden I will notice there are no sounds when using IE8.
No click sounds, etc. Then I click on the speaker in the sys tray and I get
the message "no active sound mixer available".

Within Device Manager, everything appears normal. No ? or any other issues.
When I look at the Sound Card, (SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio) all of
the components appear to be there, including the Mixer Device which says it
is working normally.

I ran the Direct X troubleshooter app and the only clue there was it
indicated there is no installed sound card.

In MS Services, Windows Audio appears to be set correctly and it thinks the
sound is running. Is was always set to Automatic and the services are
started every time I look there.

I have re-installed the drivers at least 2x recently. But a re-boot is
required after the re-install and a re-boot has always fixes the problem.

It is just agggravating that I must re-boot to get the sound back and with
all the Win XP experience out there, no solution I have found to date fixes
the issue. I see a lot of people with the same issue but most seem to fix by
restarting services and putting the service to automatic.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Asking in this .NET programming discussion group is unlikely to get you the
help you need. Ask in an XP group. Here's how to find one:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/

In the tree on the left, open English, then open Windows. In the Windows
subcategory, find and open the Windows XP subcategory. Find a group there
for your question.
