No active mixer devices and CD drive playing up

Hi, there have been loads of posts about this problem on loads of forums and
I have tried everything suggested (except the stuff I’m not comfortable with
like deleting drivers and reg. edits).

I have an HP Pavilion dv2130ea laptop computer with XP media edition and sp2.

I have had lots of automatic updates recently.

When I boot my computer, everything is fine.

Then after about 5 minutes the sound stops working. I can hear the windows
sound when my computer logs on and off and I have quick play volume buttons
which blip when I press then, I can still hear that. All other sound is lost.

The computer will also fail to recognise anything I put into the CD/DVD RW
drive, I have to right click and explore before I can open anything.

When this happens, the taskbar briefly changes to a style which resembles an
older version of windows, then changes back.

A single click on the sound icon in the taskbar does nothing, a double click
brings up the following error message:

‘There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go
to control panel, click printers and other hardware, and then click add
hardware. This program will now close.’

‘Printers and other hardware’ does not exist.

When I click on ‘sounds and audio devices’ no options are available (they’re
all greyed out).

I went into ‘system’, ‘hardware’, ‘device manager’, ‘sound, video and game
controllers’, and found the following:
Audio codecs, conexant high definition audio, legacy audio drivers, legacy
video capture devices, media control devices, and video codecs.
This is all normal.
I went into each one and it says they’re all working properly. None of them
have any options to uninstall or roll back driver.

Then, from device manager, I went into ‘DVD/CD-ROM drives’, and found
‘HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N.

When I tried to roll back driver I get the following error message:

‘No driver files have been backed up for this device’.

And it won’t let me roll it back. I haven’t uninstalled the driver because I
can’t get hold of one to replace it with.

I have run PC recovery to a time when my sound and CD/DVD drive worked.

I have installed the latest direct x.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my sound card from
the HP website. There is no option to download the CD/DVD RW driver.

My computer has a separate partition on the HD which contains all the
drivers etc. for reformatting, but I can’t figure out how to use it.

Does anyone know how to fix this please???

I had a similar problem.

Start > Run > type "services.msc"

Right click on "windows media" and click "properties"

Make sure it is running, and if not click "start"

That worked for me.
