Personal Antivirus Program Attached To My Computer

I am an XP user. Somehow a program called Personal Antivirus has gotten
stuck on my computer. I went to Programs in my C: drive and found it listed
as PAV. When I went to delete it, I was given a message saying, "Access
Denied." Now a box shows up in the lower right hand corner every five
minutes wanting me to click a button and buy a product. How can I get rid of
this? I did a Goggle Search and found multitude of ways listed, but can get
none to work. I am not computer savy, so need the easiest way to get rid of
this. Please help! Thank you.

Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. It is called "rogue"
because it pretends to be A Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them!
You can see if there are removal instructions here:

Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html
or here - Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft

These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the
computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected
by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean.

If your machine is one of these cases, get guided help at one of the
specialty forums below. Or you can take your machine to a local computer
professional. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of
places.

Download and Install Malwarebytes Anti-Spyware version 1.36 (Free) from:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Click on Update Tab and run Check for Updates to get the latest definitions.
Now "Perform Full Scan" and this hopefully will remove it for you.

Your post was the best. I downloaded everything, ran the scan, 67 issues
came up, and they are all now gone! Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

Glad to hear everything worked out for you. Malwarebytes is one of the best,
as they normally put out multiple definitions updates daily.

MBAM is *not* an anti-virus application!!

Hello. I have just witnessed a wonderful miracle! Personal Antivirus
nailed
us over the weekend, in Internet Explorer. A co-worker of my daughter's
suggested downloading Google's Chrome web browser so that I could get
access
to the web, since PAV had us blocked thru Explorer. Today while
web-searching for more help on this problem, I found reference to
Malwarebyte's FREE anti- malware scan-and-cleanup software. I downloaded
it
and ran the scan. It listed 10 problems. I had all of them deleted,
restarted, and the problem was gone! Now I'm gonna go buy their package
and let it do the work that McAfee failed to do. McAfee couldn't even find
the problem when I ran its scan! YIPPEE!!!

Grandpa,
I can understand your glee at having your computer back from
the grips of some unwanted and pervasive software that presumes to install
itself. However, when all is said and done PAV is MALWARE and McAfee is,
primarily, an ANTIVIRUS software. I have heard some poor things said about
McAffe, though, but still. You should have the right software for the given
job. First and foremost an effective AntiVirus suite, next a decent
AntiMalware program and MalwareBytes is probably the best from what I've
heard about it recently. Then there's SpyWare, which can be described as
Malware but other programs specialise in that as a primary target of
destruction such as SpyBotSD. Then come a host of PUPs (Potentially
Unwanted Programs). I don't know of any utilities that can cover all of it!
Programs of this sort tend to overlap in what they deal with the best, and
so you are going to have to use your judgement whether or not you have it
all covered.
