permissions for shared printer

Hi,

We have a network with 2000-pro en xp-pro clients. Server is sbs2k. I've
installed a hp4650dn-color laserjet onto the network with a share on the
server. At the clients I've installed the printer on a local port with the
unc-name (//server/printer).

The trouble is that I want the use of color restricted. Is there a way to
set permissions for (groups of) users to print colorcopies? Or to prevent
the printer from making colorcopies for everyone, for that matter?

I can't find a setting on the printer itself for making only greyscale
copies and it seems that the users can always access the printing
preferences for the installed printer. I thought the printersettings on the
server would override the clientsettings, but that doesn't seem to be the
case...

Thanks,

David

Users should always be able to change their local printer preferences within
the application that loads the common printui or within the application
custom printui dialog.

You can change the driver on the client to a monochrome device that utilizes
the same printer language as the 4650 Color. HP ships the 4650 with PCL 6
built in. Not sure if the PostScript language is also installed. Test a
couple of monochrome lasers for the best match of form and tray assignments.

The way you have set up the connections, the client will always override the
server setting since the client renders the document than sends raw data to
the server that just gets forward to the printer.

That seems to be the best (only?) solution, I'll give it a try. Thanks.

(The best solution would be to have another b/w-printer in the room, I
know, but if that's not possible and only some people need to print in
color....well..)

The only way to have overriding serversettings would be to connect the
printer directly to the server and share it from there, I presume...?

Thanks.

The user will always override default server settings when they can set the
properties within their application even when the client makes a connection
to the server.

ah, it's clear to me now....thanks. Btw, the problem in the OP has been
solved by making an extra b/w-printer. Works perfect.

Hi

I've about 4000 printdevices (15% color).
All colordevices got now to queues (Printer_mono and Printer_color)
We changed the driver to mono and add it to the "mono"-Queue.
Afterwards we removed the group "erveryone priniting" form the security
of to the color-Queues an put a specialgroup (just with users allowed to
print color)
Most done with Prnmgr and prncfg and an own Inffile
